10 The Mongols During the 1100’s, the Mongols became the dominant nomadic group in central Asia. Mongolia: steppe, pastures, isolated At first, Mongols were divided into separate clans until 1206 when Temujin organized them under one government. Military leadership was based on skill - expert fighters on horseback, used bow and arrow, & organized men into cavalry units As a result of his success, Temujin was recognized as khan (absolute ruler) and renamed Genghis Khan (universal ruler) Goal was to create a large empire & conquer others

11 The Mongols (pgs ) Who were the “Steppe people?” Where did the settle? Why? Although the Seljuk Turks were skilled warriors, they had some problems. Explain these problems and how it led to their eventual takeover. Explain characteristics of the Mongols. How were they organized? List three achievements of Genghis Khan. Where did the Mongols expand? How were they able to conquer such vast territories and large populations? How did the Mongols impact the culture of Europe and Asia? Explain the successes of Kublai Khan? Why was Marco Polo important? How did Chinese civilization change under Mongol control? What led to the fall of the Mongol empire? Who took over next?

20 Instead of separate bellwork today, I want you to read excerpts about Samurai wisdom from the Hagakure. For each excerpt you should write a 1-2 sentence modern translation. Focus on the main idea! Be ready to discuss! THINKER: Are there similarities between ancient Samurai wisdom and how people act in today’s society?

21 ABC Brainstorm Get out a blank sheet of notebook paper.
Label each line with the letters of the alphabet: A-Z While reading the section, you are going to try and come up with an important term, idea, concept or person that matches with each letter. You will then describe it, or write a sentence. Try and get all 26 letters!! The person with the best answers and most letters gets extra credit!
