What is an electromagnetic wave?
An electromagnetic wave is a wave that doesn’t need a medium to pass through in order to travel. There are 7 different types of electromagnetic waves.
3
Wave 1: Radio Waves Slowest of all waves
Are a type of electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths in the electromagnetic spectrum longer than infrared light. Radio waves occur by lightning, radio towers, and radio satellites. Examples: lightning and radiowaves
4
Wave 2: Micro Waves A subset of all radio waves.
Micro waves can be as long as one meter to a short as one millimeter. Examples of micro waves: cell phone, microwave
5
Wave 3: Infrared Waves Is electromagnetic radiation with a wavelength longer than visible light or as far as the eye can see. Examples: night vision goggles, heat seeking goggles
6
Wave 4: visible light waves
3rd fastest wave of all seven Is basically the wave that comes off of light You can see it with the human eye. Examples: the sun, light tower
7
Wave 5: ultra violent waves
Is light that has shorter wavelengths than visible light The wave is invisible to the human eye, though some insects such as bumblebees can see them. Examples: a sauna, a tanning bed
8
Wave 6: X-rays Everybody knows what an x-ray is.
It is not visible to the human eye, but can see seen with an x ray machine. Everybody has seen an x-ray. Examples: an x-ray, x-ray machine
9
Wave 7: Gamma Rays Fastest of all waves.
Nothing on the world can see a gamma ray. Is electromagnetic radiation of high frequency. Examples: x ray, radio wave
