Reading Card Your child has been given a green and red reading card. This card indicates whether or not a book needs changing. To alert us when a book needs changing the children will need to turn their cards red and when a book does not need changing turn their card green. The children will also select a home reader book from the trolley. If either or both the Oxford Reading Tree and home reader book needs changing the card will need to be turned to red. In Year 2 the children’s books will be changed on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays if finished therefore, it is important that your child is competent with using this card.
11
Reading Please remember to date and sign reading diaries regularly. Children need to read at least three times per week. The emphasis should be on reading for meaning and discussing the book as well as practising decoding, but above all - enjoyment. The children need to read widely – both Oxford Reading Tree and home reader books are important, especially as reading SATs are based on a variety of texts and some of the questions are quite complex. Library books – Get them to choose a range of different books to develop their reading skills.

Support Spend 10-15 minutes reading with your child everyday.
Homework needs to be completed to a high standard and should be handed in on time. Please ensure it is neatly presented. Handwriting counts towards writing in SATs. While we practice this in class everyday, please ensure that your child is practicing handwriting at home regularly so it is neat and legible. Support spelling of common exception words and general spellings rules. Work on Grammar and Punctuation – Use Collins books that comes home to support your teaching.
