8. How can Parents help? English
Encourage a range of reading genres, including fiction, non-fiction, newspaper reports, letters, poems and lists. Read books, newspapers, magazines or from the internet.
Encourage a range of writing, similar to above. Write shopping lists, write formal and informal letters, write explanations and instructions. Write directions for a journey.
Continue to support spelling work, filling in missing words as well as single words. ‘Spotting the mistake’ activities. Making word lists through spelling patterns. Using a dictionary and thesaurus.

Paper B – use of a calculator allowed

More using & applying (problem solving and ‘real life’) questions

10. How can Parents help? Numeracy
Encourage the use of everyday Maths. Develop mental strategies for solving problems. Look at time, money, weight, fractions, decimals and percentages.
Continue to learn times tables. Use them to solve harder questions. Eg. Use 8x6=48 to solve 80x6= or 16x6=
To help children develop the skill of understanding when a written calculation is needed, instead of a mental calculation.
Getting children to check answers.
Use a calculator to solve problems. Understand that a calculator does not show money correctly. Eg. 3.5 = £3.50
