What migration is What is meant by push and pull factors About the benefits and challenges of migration To work together!

2 Migration Migration is the movement of people from one place to another. The movement may be just around a corner to a better house. How many of you have ever moved house? It may be from one part of the country to another in search of a job. Start with question – how many of have ever moved house? Technically most people in this room have migrated at some stage or another!

3 Can you match the word to the definition?
A type of migrant who leaves their country because they want to find a better job. A safe place to stay which is offered to refugees. Treating someone unfairly Economic migrant Asylum Oppress

4 Internal Migration For many people country areas have very little to offer so they move to the towns and cities. This is called rural to urban migration

5 OR For many people a move to a different country holds many attractions. This is called international migration.

6 Immigration is the migration of people into an area.
Emigration is the migration of people out of an area.

Since 2004 lots of people from countries such as Poland and Lithuania have come to work in Ireland In 2010 the census recorded there being 120,000 Polish-born in Ireland.

9 Why do people migrate? People migrate for two reasons:
To get away from things that they do not like. These are known as push factors. People are attracted to things that they do like. These are called pull factors.

Push Factors  Pull Factors  Can you think of any others? Get pupils to come up with a few of their own. Allow them to come and write on the board. Sort cards – what would be the main push/pull factor in the following situations.

13 Activity! Group work Imagine you are a migrant from one of the pictures You have just arrived in Dublin What ‘pushed’ you from your home country? What ‘pulled’ you to Ireland? Describe your first few days in the city. Think about language difficulties, making friends, finding a job etc. Give pupils mins for this activity. Feedback

14 Activity! Group work In your groups create a ‘back story’ for your fictional migrant Nominate one member of the team to ‘act’ as the character for a hot seat interview. Write out 5 questions to ask the other migrants Give pupils mins for this activity. Feedback

15 Conclusion What are the benefits of migration?
Think about the origins of your favourite foods! And even your favourite music! Ask pupils if they know different ways of saying welcome. Think about the benefits of migration – food, music etc
