1 Toolbox Lesson North Carolina Central University Department of music
Lenora Helm Hammonds, Assistant Professor Durham, North Carolina, United States

2 BASED ON RESEARCH OF DR. JAY DORFMAN
Goal is for the pedagogical, technological content knowledge to allow one to apply: Educational Theory Learning Environment Design Technology Tools While maintaining integrity of musical content.

3 Technology based music instruction
BASED ON THEORY AND PRACTICE PEDAGOGY FOR USING TECHNOLOGY TO TEACH MUSIC. ACCOUNTS FOR STUDENTS’ DIFFERENCES USING TECHNOLOGY AS A FUNDAMENTAL PEDAGOGICAL INSTRUMENT NOT A TEACHER-CENTERED FOCUS OF USING TECHNOLOGY AS ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS, e.g. TO CREATE WORKSHEETS, HANDOUTS OR PDFs, RECORDING REHEARSALS OR PERFORMANCES FOR VIEWING AND DISCUSSION KEY IDEA IS STUDENTS CAN AND SHOULD DEAL DIRECTLY WITH TECHNOLOGY: TEACHERS DESIGN EXPERIENCES WHERE STUDENTS ENGAGE DIRECTLY IN ACTIVITIES WITH HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE.

4 TBMI Assignment and Rubric
Talk through PDF of Basic Arranging Exercise for Technology Based Music Instruction Talk through PDF of Assessment of Basic Arranging Exercise for Technology Based Music Instruction

5 Basic Arranging Exercise for TBMI
Script written by student: A recording of me performing the Rodgers & Hart tune, a ballad, “You Are Too Beautiful” with rhythm section and muted trumpet The 4-bar intro, played by the rhythm section, is comprised of the chord changes of the last 4 bars of the AABA form Now I will perform the melody at the top of the first A Now the second A begins Now the B section begins The last A begins Now muted trumpet will solo/improvise over the complete form Now the vocals will return to sing the melody over the B section and the last A with the muted trumpet playing the fills Now to the coda to end the tune This was a very interesting project. The narrative was something especially new for me. I had never done that before. I think this project really teaches students how to properly prepare a chart for rhythm section and other instrumentalists in order to have a successful rehearsal and performance. It also teaches students how to learn new technology and software to accomplish these tasks.

6 Student Final Assignment Arranging Chart & tBMI Recording
Student narrates a recording of performance of himself pre-recorded in class. Walks listener through events in performance and aspects of the musical arrangement.

7 Composition and tbmi “TBMI is interrelated with composition. Students’ creativity needs to be “fed,” and perhaps the best way to do so is through listening. This is akin to the tradition of jazz pedagogy in which students learn to improvise by listening to the improvisations of masters, and sometimes transcribing solos so they can fully understand them. Teachers find that using listening examples that emphasize particular elements of music allows students to understand those elements better. This is a type of experiential learning that appeals to the philosophical foundation of TBMI. Music listening can be the fodder for musical creativity. And in return, creating music can lead to more sophisticated listening; that is, students will approach further listening activities with a more acute awareness of the happenings within the music.” from Technology Based Music Instruction, Dr. Jay Dorfman
