7 Global Surface Temperature Datasets
WMO-OMM Developped mainly for climate change assessement and monitoring There are three centres that maintain global climate datasets: Met Office, UK, in collaboration with the Climatic Research Unit at the University of East Anglia (United Kingdom); National Climatic Data Center, which is part of NOAA (United States); Goddard Institute for Space Studies, which is part of NASA (United States). The development of climate datasets is based on the following: Routinely disseminated daily and monthly weather and climate observations by the National Meteorological and Hydrological Services of the 189 WMO Members following the WMO standards for data collection, quality control and exchange; Historical climate records dating back to 1850, including those available from marine climate summaries; Recovered old climate records worldwide as part of continuous data rescue efforts promoted by WMO and its Members; Peer reviewed scientific methods for quality control, homogenization and interpolation to constitute high-quality global climate datasets. WMO-OMM - WWR to be updated on yearly basis - Climate normals for operational climate services  Guidance to be prepared Promote exchanging useful climate extreme indices based on daily data ( formal procedure?) - Set up an International portal on historical Data and Metadata Capacity building on CDMS: + Assess existing infrastructure at national level and the need for improvement + Accelerate Data Rescue worldwide + Promote using WMO standards and WIS infrastructure for climate data and metadata discovery, access and exchange through training workshops CSIS workshop, Geneva 5-7 April 2011

15 CCl priority w.r.t climate data
WMO-OMM CCl-XV stressed the importance of climate data in climate monitoring, research and applications, climate change and adaptation as well as in supporting the operation of the newly established Global Framework for Climate Services (GFCS). Recognizing that real opportunities exist for the improvement of climate data management in its various aspects including archiving, quality control, discovery and timely exchange Underlining that collaboration of Members is critical to ensure high quality, timely and accessible climate data from all possible sources encompassing land and marine data and including in-situ, space based and proxy data. CCl-XV recommended to work towards to the development of a high quality global climate data management system which will benefit from the progress made in implementing modern Climate Data Management Systems (CDMSs) and Climate Data Rescue (DARE) and the utilization of international standards for data representation, exchange and database models. 16 High quality global data management system for climate HQ-GDMSC
WMO-OMM HQ-GDMSC will support the operational functions of the GFCS Climate Services Information System. Its concept is based on putting in place operational climate data processes. It will build on and link Climate Data Management infrastructure at country level, regional and global levels. The technical procedures for operating the HQ-GDMSC will build on existing WMO manuals with the core elements being the CCl Guide to Climatological practices, the guidelines on best practices (WCDMP series) and the upcoming WIS and WIGOS manuals. HQ-GDMSC will use WIS data discovery, access and retrieval facilities and standards, and WIGOS standardization for Quality Control and Quality Assurance CSIS workshop, Geneva 5-7 April 2011
