1 Unit 1: Application of photography
Reece Bell

2 Introduction Into Applications Of Photography
In this task I will be looking at four different applications of photography. The four applications I have chosen to research and discuss are fashion, architecture, medical and illustrations. I have chosen to talk about these applications because I find these most interesting out of the other types of applications. After defining these applications I will look at photographers that work with these applications and show examples of their work.

3 Fashion Photography Fashion photography is a style of photography that is used to publicise new trends of clothes. Fashion photographers will take photos of fashion in different ways, for example, at cat walks were many different styles of clothing will be presented on a walk way on different models. This type of fashion photography is to get a large portfolio of styles instead of one type of style on one or two models. Another way a fashion photographer will take photos is staging a model wearing a certain style of clothes. The photos will be uploaded to fashion websites or published in magazines.

4 ANNIE LEIBOVITZ Alice In wonderland
Annie Leibovitz is a portrait photographer but is known for her interesting style of fashion photography. She takes old stories, for example, Alice In Wonderland and uses the story to compare models of fashion with the story. Leibovitz is known for her quotes with her photos. For example, Leibovitz used the scene in Alice In Wonderland where Alice kept growing different sizes by drinking from a glass. Leibovitz used this to speak about models being told to lose weight and grow by their employers at their will. Leibovitz’s quote was “It was much pleasant at home, thought poor Alice, when one wasn’t always growing larger and smaller, and being ordered by mice and rabbits. And yet and yet it’s rather curious. You know, this sort of life!”. Leibovitz’s photograph backs up her quote as the girl can’t fit in the picture’s scene so she would be ordered by her employers to shrink her body size.

5 ANNIE LEIBOVITZ Element Fashion
This photo is a good example of Leibovitz’s fashion photography capturing the dangerous elements in a beautiful collage including a stunning model and a dress that blends in with the dangerous elements that are the waves. The model’s dress has the same effects as the waves that are crashing into the rock and this effect clashes but makes the photo. The model’s dress also has the same effect as a mermaid’s tail, it might just be the length but it’s another effect someone could pick up on.

6 ANNIE LEIBOVITZ Disney Princess
Leibovitz went through a period of creating Disney Princesses in real life and bringing them to life. Leibovitz was very clever and made it into an art to bring a fictional character to life and making them look how a princess should look. A good example of a Leibovitz Disney Princess photograph was the princess from the film Brave. Leibovitz brought the princess to life using clever camera skills and a good model. She captured each element from the dress to the model herself. The princess in the picture is an close to exact replica from the film Brave.

7 ANNIE LEIBOVITZ making her Career
Annie started her career by befriending celebrities and gaining their trust. She started with celebrities like Leonardo DiCaprio and Whoopi Goldberg by gaining their trust and taking very personal portraits of these celebrities. Annie has been known to take pictures of the most powerful people in the world. For example, Queen Elizabeth II and Barack Obama. Annie has been able to gain the trust of these celebrities and used their trust to turn it into art by taking photos that would be classed as personal or not generally seen by the public. This has got Annie noticed by a magazine company known as Vouge, from then on Annie was a photographer for this magazine, taking shots of models with elements of film, for example, Disney and Alice In Wonderland.

8 Architectural Photography
Architectural photography is when a designed structure is shown from a photograph. People will take photos of buildings and structures because they think it is pleasing to view. There is a skill in taking photos of buildings and structures, some buildings and structures are to large to gain a full view. Photographers will have to find the best view to get the best elements in one shot but this means they will have fight the light. If the natural light is to bright the photographer will have to use filters and other pieces of camera equipment to fight this light.

9 Eugène Atget The French Modernization
Eugène is an old fashioned French photographer, mostly in the art of Architectural photography. Eugène was born in Libourne, France on the 12th February 1857 so this makes him an early photographer. Some people suggest that Eugène was a sailor and also starred in plays throughout his life. But what made Eugène stand out was with his work in photography. Eugène had this idea of taking pictures before the modernization in France. He started taking these photos in 1890 and doing this he self taught himself completely. Eugène started naturally taking photos of old quarters and traders that were being condemned by the rise of department stores. A lot of families in France depended on small businesses and a lot of families lost their businesses because of the French modernization. Eugène captured a street with town houses and the families store fronts to show the effects of modernization. The picture shows the empty shells that once were a thriving trading street but now is nothing but a back street and a memory.

10 Eugène Atget Coin, rue du Cimetière Saint-Benoît, 1923
Eugène is known for his architectural photography and also he’s known for taking a photo of a certain place over different periods of time. The picture I have chosen proves this because Eugène took a picture of these semi worn down buildings in the Latin Quarter (Paris) in The buildings had been left by families and owners due to problems in the economy and stress from the French Modernization. Eugène returned to take another photo in 1915 because he heard that it was going to be destroyed. It was delayed due to World War 1 taking effect at the time, and the site was still standing in Eugène returned in 1923 to take this last photo of the buildings before they were destroyed many years later for further infrastructure and even the Paris Metro. Eugène took these ongoing photos to show the loss of what once was a neighbourhood instead of showing the progress, that is why this picture stood out to me because it represents history’s architecture and life before a certain time. Eugène used the black curves around the photo as an effect so only the derelict building is focused by the viewer. The black and white effect shows the timing of the architecture and how it was once structured.

11 Eugène Atget Poterne des Peupliers, 1913
In this image, Eugène captured a lot of what once was someone's business and home. Knowing this I wondered if he had taken any photos of where these people who fled lived after losing their homes and businesses due to the French modernization. I found a photo that shows what these people had to resort to for housing themselves due to the problems the country was facing. At this time in history, France was in ruin. They were at war losing thousands of men a day and the country was also trying to rapidly expand with the modernization. People had to suffer and resort to becoming their own architects in a sense. These people would create their own shelters from an abandoned barn or structure and transform it into temporary accommodation. Some people would even make their own shelter from discarded objects and rubble. This photography functions as a piece of history and it shows the architectural nature a person has. This photo shows a poorly built shelter but it was built because the person who built it needed to sleep somewhere with shelter. This comes naturally to people as most people will do anything to survive hard times and this photo proves this and has made me and probably others that have viewed this photo think about these facts.

12 Illustration Photography
Illustration photography for me is taking a photo and enhancing more then a camera ever could. Illustration photography allows me to be more creative with photography, for example, if I want to take a photo with me standing against a wall but I want to add an effect like a drawn pair of wings I can do that using photoshop or I could draw it on the wall. Illustration photography lets me create something new instead of using the same camera shot or effect and allows me to say “I created that” instead of “I took that”. A good reason to use Illustration Photography is for advertisement as it can be used to create a poster to get a message across with real world scenes but illustrated pictures.

13 Sébastien Del Grosso Sébastien Del Grosso is a Illustration Photographer who was born in France. He combines his illustration creativity with portraits of himself and others. Combining the two art forms Sébastien has created an illusion effect that looks like the sketch is coming out of the picture and has become animated. The photo is not animated but it shows the detail and skill in Sébastien’s work. Sébastien uses resources (for example, Matted Card) and Photoshop to gain his effects. Sébastien’s work is based on his life, for example, I am showing a picture on this slide that involved Sébastien holding his little girl and drawing her. This represents that he created her like he creates all his other pieces of work but she is his most cherished creation.

14 Sébastien Del Grosso “The Dark Side Of My Sketches”
Sébastien is known for his dark sketches capturing mental illness and what he suffered. By drawing these dark sketches he could show his past emotions but in a creative way. Sébastien captures his suffering using dark sketches, for example, he used a self portrait of himself and sketched one side as a dark unknown entity that can’t be explained, but it shows that he would act fine and normal but inside is suffering with his demons. This picture means a lot to me as it shows what it feels like to suffer with mental health and how hard it is to carry your demons.

15 Sébastien Del Grosso The Sketch of a Life
Sébastien is known for creating his art based upon his life. His work features elements about his life. For example, I have chosen this picture because it shows him discovering the art of illustration photography. His piece of work shows him looking at his illustrated hand that he has experimented with as he learns his new talent in illustration photography. The photo communicates how Sébastien is experimenting with photography and illustration and bringing his ideas alive starting with simple portrait shots and simple illustrated ideas.

16 Sébastien Del Grossos Career
Sébastien started his work but creating online tutorials on websites. He createdhis websites to help people be inspired by his art form (photography illustration) and give people tutorials on starting their own photography illustrations. In his website/blog he includes his views towards “The power towards the sketch”. He also talks about his past and how it influenced him to do what he does today. Sébastien’s work can be seen all over Google Images if his name is searched and he is also known in Adobe for being a graphic designer. To get this information I contacted Sébastien to get some legit sources and he gave me a link to one of his tutorial pages: 500px ISO px ISO » Beautiful Photography, Incredible StoriesTutorial: How To Create Self-Portrait Sketches - 500px ISO. 17 Medical Photography Medical photography is a type of photography documentation. What this means is that the pictures are to show an example of the medical device or procedure so the viewer can learn or understand. Medical photography is an area in photography that is carried out seriously and carefully, this is because of the photos that will be taken. Medical photography is known for it’s grim and dark images, for example, medical photography is used to show proof of autopsy. Medical photography is also a way to keep journals of previous failed or accomplished work.
