1 Rhode Island THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION (NSF) is the only federal agency whose mission includes support for all fields of fundamental science and engineering. BY THE NUMBERS Rhode Island in FY 2016 $42 Million: NSF funds awarded th: National ranking in NSF funds 8: NSF-funded institutions 189: NSF grants awarded 2: NSF research centers/facilities “Innovation flourishes as interdisciplinary research — conducted by global teams, enhanced by diverse research cultures and intellectual traditions, and bolstered by community partnerships — coalesces around problems of shared concern.” − Dr. Christina Paxson, President, Brown University EXAMPLES OF NSF-FUNDED RESEARCH IN RHODE ISLAND Researchers at Brown University’s Materials Research Science and Engineering Center perform research in the mechanics of materials at multiple scales all the way down to the nano-scale and apply principles of solid mechanics to biological problems. NSF-sponsored researchers at the University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography work collaboratively with the Naval Undersea Warfare Center to remove biofoul—accumulated microorganisms, plants, algae or animals—from boats. Research Vessel Endeavor enables scientists from Rhode Island, the greater U.S., and abroad, to conduct research and train graduate students aboard this multi-disciplinary oceanographic research vessel. Courtesy: INVESTMENT IN SCIENCE = INVESTMENT IN RHODE ISLAND The Institute for Computational and Experimental Research in Mathematics at Brown University is one of seven NSF-sponsored Mathematics Institutes across the country and the only one in New England. Brown University ranks 75th in the nation for academic institutions in research and development expenditures.1 Rhode Island employs over 40,000 people across high science and engineering business establishments.1 From FY , seven new companies were launched to develop and bring to market commercial applications of technologies first developed at the University of Rhode Island.2 Rhode Island recently experienced the highest advanced industries job growth in New England. 3 1 Science and Engineering Indicators 2016 NSF 2 web.uri.edu/economic-impact/files/URI_Economic_Impact_ful.pdf 3 Coalition for National Science Funding (CNSF) 

Rhode Island Since 1952, NSF has supported nearly 50,000 graduate students through research fellowships. Rhode Island received $3 million in NSF educational funding in FY THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION (NSF) not only funds cutting-edge research at institutions across the country; NSF’s education initiatives ensure the U.S. will remain a global leader in innovation for generations to come. EXAMPLES OF NSF-FUNDED EDUCATION PROGRAMS IN RHODE ISLAND Rhode Island high school teachers attended a 5-week workshop at the University of Rhode Island and took biotech lessons back to their classrooms at 13 different high schools. The Providence-based American Mathematical Society is supporting and encouraging the next generation of research mathematicians to have long careers as professional mathematicians through NSF-funded Mathematics Research Communities. At the Rhode Island NSF Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) Academy, low-income students in grades 6 to 12 discover firsthand the promise of higher education and the rewards of science, technology, engineering and math careers. Courtesy: “There has been a shift in this state and we are seeing more and more technology in the classroom, there is such an excited energy about this and kids are given the tools to do what they do best.” − Holly Walsh, Rhode Island Department of Education “The goal of the modern university is to prepare students for careers that don’t yet exist, using technologies that have not yet been invented, based on knowledge that hasn’t yet been discovered.” − Dr. David M. Dooley, President, University of Rhode Island Coalition for National Science Funding (CNSF) 
