External Assessment Students will carry out research into a chosen area of film focus, identifying and comparing two films from within that area and presenting their discoveries as a recorded multimedia comparative study (video essay). An area of film focus that interests and excites them from one of the following: Film Movements Film Genre & Film Style Film Theory

Independent Study Among the topics students may
The aim of the independent study is to encourage students to engage in some depth with a cinematic tradition that is unfamiliar to their own culture. Students must produce a script for a complete short documentary production exploring an aspect of film theory or film history, based on the study of films from more than one country. The documentary should be targeted at an audience of film students in the 14 to 18 years age range. Among the topics students may choose to investigate are: • genre • theme • direction • use of sound • color • editing • lighting

Rationale To prepare you for the task of constructing your own documentary script/ video essay, in this activity you will deconstruct a documentary/video essay. What you’re required to do is to analyze the use of audio & visual material for the first five minutes from one of the prescribed documentary/video essays.

Rational Part II Using the documentary screenplay template you will describe the visual material in the left column, use as much detail a you can, and in the right column, match the visual description to a description of the audio and transcription of any ‘to camera’ or ‘voice over’ (VO) speech (for dialogue just use the term sounds from extract). The middle column will be used for time.

Rationale Part III Every scene/cut should be indicated by documenting the time. Remember in screenplays one page equals one minute of screen time. Using appropriate terminology will help you be concise, if you don’t something or can’t remember a term you should look it up.
