Homework Homework is issued on Friday and collected on Wednesday.
A spelling list for this term will be sent home. Homework is carefully selected to support your child’s learning in school. Children are encouraged to make every effort to do their homework independently. Please ensure homework is done as neatly as possible. Homework is also useful in encouraging children’s self-organisation. Marking of homework may be written or verbal as appropriate. Reading at home is expected every day as homework. Children can change their books as and when they need by letting us know first thing in the morning.
8
Phonics We will be teaching phonics daily through games and spelling activities. We teach phonics to help with reading and writing. We also teach spelling of high frequency words. A good website is Phonics Play.

Expectations in Year 2 Golden Rules: Always be gentle
Children will begin to become more independent and are expected to organise themselves: eg hang up their NAMED cardigan/jumper, organise their work. They are also expected to uphold the school ethos as laid out in the Golden Rules and be good role models for the younger children. Golden Rules: Always be gentle Be kind and helpful Work hard Look after property Listen to people Be honest
11
Expectations in Year 2 Children are expected to try their hardest with class work. This includes presentation of work which needs to be neat at all times. Handwriting- starting to use ‘leads in’ and then joining up. Please encourage this at home. We will send home a letter formation sheet. Marking- you will see a tick in a cloud on your child’s work. This means they have understood the learning intention. Other abbreviations include VF, S and I. You may also see stars and wishes. Children are encouraged to be independent in keeping the cloakroom and classrooms tidy and organised.

Communication Three-way process (staff/children/parents)
Lining up time at the beginning of the school day is good for quick messages After school is better for a longer chat If possible, try to arrange this in advance Staff meetings are on Tuesday evenings We welcome your support in upholding the school’s principles Parent helpers- We will sometimes need your help for school trips, craft activities etc. If you would like to be a helper, please see your child’s teacher. For reading, we welcome your help. A regular session is best for us, but one off help is welcome too.

Assessment in Year 2 Teacher Assessments and Test results help us chart progress within a year group, from year group to year group, across a key stage and from key stage to key stage. KS1 to KS2 Teacher Assessments and SATs are a measure for us to see how we’re doing as a school. Testing/assessment can help us focus on children’s strengths/areas for development, and ours as a school. Teacher Assessments take place during the whole of the child’s time at school. These may be short term or longer term but assessment is all about improving teaching and learning. Self Assessment- red/orange/green faces on work
15
Year 2 SATs We have to make teacher assessments on all children in Year 2 and send results off to County by the end of June each year. These assessments are for: speaking and listening, reading, writing ( including spelling and grammar), Maths and Science. SATs are used to inform Teacher Assessments
16
When and Where? All of the SATs assessments will take place during the Summer term. A lot is changing this year, including exact details of when they will take place and how the children’s results will be levelled. However, it will all be low key and delivered by class teachers.
17
Finally… We hope your child has a fulfilling year in Year 2, but PLEASE come and see us if there are any problems. A big ‘thank you’ for coming and for your support.
