1 Smoking Cessation: Different Modalities and LDL Level Change with Quitting Sadia Anees Ali, MD Cook County-Loyola-Provident Family Medicine Residency Program Loyola University Chicago, Stritch School of Medicine Abstract Results Participation Demographics & Smoking Trends The Smoking Cessation Program takes a step forward while celebrating the 20th anniversary of Tar Wars and aiming at a 100% nicotine-free goal for 2010 healthy people. A support group based on the American Lung Association’s Freedom from Smoking Program, led by a certified facilitator, works on an integrated behavioral, pharmacological, and social interventions approach toward preventing the # 1 cancer in the United States. The participants meet over a period of 8 weeks and choose to be in either of three categories while working their way to quitting: (1) Cold turkey, (2) Bupropion, (3) Nicotine patch. The quit rate and changes in LDL levels is assessed separately for each group at the end of class in 8 weeks and again at 6 months to assess for relapse. All the efforts in fighting against smoking have focused individually on either pharmacological or behavior changes. Although physician counseling as part of regular visit has been found to be useful, no specific patient-physician interaction support group has been designed to deal with nicotine addiction on the same lines as any other drug addiction. Our goals for 2010 healthy people is to be 100% nicotine free by that time and in order to achieve that goal concrete trials for effective smoking cessation must be set which would work on integrated behavioral, pharmacotherapeutic and social interventions. Group Representation by Outcomes Methodology Conclusion Twenty-three patients at Englewood Clinic of Cook County registered to participate in the program of which 7 completed by meeting once every week over a total of 7 weeks. Participants were provided with reading materials, workbooks and CDs by American Lung Association. The participants picked the modality they wanted to help them with smoking cessation: 1) Nicotine patch or 2) Bupropion. The third group decided to quit 3) Cold Turkey. LDL levels were drawn at the beginning of session and then at 3 months follow up for successful quitters. Smoking Cessation program helped 1 out of 7 participants quit and helped 4 out of 7 participants to cut down nicotine intake. No significant data could be derived as to which modality is most effective for smoking cessation as the only successful person quit Cold Turkey. LDL levels dropped in successful quitter over 3 months but no relation could be established because of small sample size. References Rose JE, et. al.
