1 3rd GRADE EXCEL Vocabulary Reading Strategies Notes from the Teacher
Sept. 23, 2016 Reading Strategies Vocabulary Visualizing: This week, we will be reading The Spooky Tail of Prewitt Peacock. During this time, we will visualize the story and find the text evidence proving WHY we visualize the way we do. We will also talk about author perception and mood within our visualization. Class Novel: We will also be reading the first book in the series The Chronicles of Narnia, The Magician’s Nephew. This will be a whole class novel. We will be addressing a variety of skills we are learning in class, such as visualization, mood, and figurative language. With figurative language, we will discuss alliteration, hyperbole, personification, metaphor, simile, onomatopoeia, and idioms. Guided Reading: For the past few weeks, we have been getting in to the guided reading routine. We have been practicing with smaller books and learning to discuss in small groups. We can’t wait to dig deeper in to some of our favorite novels. Students should be using context clues in their sentences when using new vocabulary words. We are modeling different ways to start sentences and structure sentences. For example, sentences may tell a setting, give a description, use figurative language, include the definition in an appositive, illustrate a comparison, and explain a problem/solution or show a cause and effect relationship. This weeks words are from the poem, “Seal.” swerve utter flick whoop speedy plop Notes from the Teacher If we missed you at Open House, please contact us if you would like to schedule a parent teacher conference in November.
