1 International Day Against…
NB: This Powerpoint uses Century Gothic as its font to be as accessible as possible for dyslexic readers. A starting slide to have up while class/year group assemble.

2 Homophobia (IDAHO)… or Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHOT) or Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) Explanation on the next slide….

3 SO… which is it? Explanation:
Originally there was called the Internation Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO) then, in 2009, they expanded the concept to include transphobia so it became (IDAHOT) – in 2009 the campaign called for people to focus on highlighting transphobic violence, legislation and practices. It is only very recently – this year in fact – that some countries, including the UK, have moved to IDAHOBIT – the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia. The ‘i’ in IDAHOBIT represents intersex people who often face the same misconceptions and pressures around sex and gender as the trans community. So really… it’s all of them. But, seeing as we are in the UK, let’s go with IDAHOBIT as it is the most inclusive.

4 IDAHOBIT Now that’s sorted… What is IDAHOBIT?
You could ask at this point: Does anyone know anything about IDAHOBIT beyond what we’ve said already – that it’s an international day against homophobia, biphobia, transphobia and transphobia? Some may know something or they may just guess that it is on the day you are doing the assembly. Once they’ve shared what they know/that they don’t know anything, move on…

5 IDAHOBIT Definition: IDAHOBIT is observed on May 17 and aims to coordinate international events that raise awareness of LGBT rights violations and stimulate interest in LGBT rights work worldwide. Good to note: In 2013, commemorations took place in almost 120 countries, in all world regions. You could ask at this point: Does anyone know or can anyone guess why it’s held on the 17th May? It was chosen to commemorate the decision to remove homosexuality as a mental illness from the International Classification of Diseases of the World Health Organization in 1990.

6 IDAHOBIT Homophobia? Biphobia? Transphobia? Look like? What does:
You could give your audience a couple of minutes to see if they can define these terms and think up responses and then you can take suggestions – most answers will probably cover some part of it: Definitions you might want to use: verbal abuse – being called names, rumours, malicious gossip physcial abuse – spitting, punching, kicking, knocking over, destruction of property intimidation – being excluded, being silenced, the ‘look’ (this is hard to define, but we all know when we are being looked at and judged/disparraged.) bullied at school and online chased from their homes blackmailed harassed in both the public and private spheres, including online denied access to health services discriminated against in the workplace exposed to coercive practices, such as ‘conversion therapy’ These things can happen to LGBT people in any community. The reason we do equalities work, promote inclusion and educate on issues affecting LGBT people and include LGBT voices and identities in our lessons is to reduce the likelihood that it will happen in our community.

7 So what happens on IDAHOBIT?
The next few slides show some of activities completed around the world for IDAHOBIT

8 IDAHOBIT National and local governments can support IDAHOBIT by flying rainbow flags, holding seminars and workshops and inviting LGBT organisations in to talk to elected officials.

9 IDAHOBIT Community groups often organise fundraisers to raise money for LGBT charities – concerts are quite common.

10 IDAHOBIT This workshop linked in with supportive churches in London and prays through and with the stories of individuals who focused on hope in the midst of homophobic oppression. It focuses on the story of the martyred Ugandan LGBT rights organizer David Kato, who, with his religious and secular friends, resisted the anti-gay witch-hunts in his own country.

11 IDAHOBIT All around the world, schools, business, charities and other organisations produce and display posters which give information about LGBT services and advertise events to celebrate IDAHOBIT.

12 IDAHOBIT This year’s theme…Families! Specifically:
“Love makes a family” Which focuses on the different types of family there are and what a support they can be. This short film highlights the key message of this years IDAHOBIT – that love makes a family. You can point out that there are families all over Scotland that have same-sex parents; while not common, this is still completely normal. There are follow up activities for both primary and secondary schools downloadable from lgbtyouth.org.uk

13 What could our school do?
IDAHOBIT What could our school do? A slide to raise ideas for other things you may want to do as part of IDAHOBIT, or a place to put what else you are doing. This could be things like: Have a poster competition to design an anti-homophobic/anti-biphobic/anti-transphobic campaign. Create a ‘Thought Box’ for people to share their experiences around issues around LGBT identities in your school Hold a fundraiser: Quiz Bake sale Football game (to highlight lack of out LGBT players in the football leagues)

14 IDAHOBIT www.lgbtyouth.org.uk
We’d like to think that everyone in our school is safe and happy to be here. Also, we hope that you all know that if you have any problems or issues, we’re here to help. If you want further information you can visit
