2 Welcome – Our Time Together
Introduce Teams Mathematical Mindsets Shifts if Mathematics Instruction and Standards OER Landscape Explore OER Materials Explore Reviews of OER Materials

3 Experiences in Mathematics
Think back on your math experience. In your group, share why you chose this number Stand by the number that best represents your experience: 1 – not a very positive experience 5 – very positive experience Whole group share out Graphic by Maialisa| CC0

4 Mathematical Mindset Society perpetuates the notion that negative math attitudes and anxieties of math are acceptable and even highlighted. Based on our own experiences in math – not about our abilities We have typically done a poor job of teaching math One correct solution math (the teachers) Speed equates with “being good at math” Only some students/people have the ability to do well in math Resource: Jo Boaler – You Cubed and Mathematical Mindsets

5 Shifting the Experiences Students Have with Mathematics
Honor how children reason with math Growth mindset Value mistakes as an opportunity for learning Opportunity for discourse Conceptual understanding Deeper focus Continual opportunities to reason with numbers Rich tasks that promote reasoning Photo by Raechel Romero| Unsplash License

6 Shifts in Math Education

7 Focus - Greater focus on fewer topics
In grades K–2: Concepts, skills, and problem solving related to addition and subtraction In grades 3–5: Concepts, skills, and problem solving related to multiplication and division of whole numbers and fractions In grade 6: Ratios and proportional relationships, and early algebraic expressions and equations In grade 7: Ratios and proportional relationships, and arithmetic of rational numbers In grade 8: Linear algebra and linear functions Photo by Pexels | CC0

8 Domain Development by Grade

9 Coherence - Linking topics and thinking across grade
Purposeful progression of learning math ideas from grade to grade and within the various domains within grades or courses. Learning is carefully connected across grades so that students can build new understanding onto foundations built in previous years. Photo by AquilaSol | Unsplash

10 Example of Progression of Mathematical Ideas
Add, Subtract, Multiply & Divide Whole Numbers Fractions – Unit Fractions & Operations Ratios & Proportions Expressions & Equations Linear Equations & Functions

11 Rigor – Balance of Learning
Rigor refers to deep, authentic command of mathematical concepts, not making math harder or introducing topics at earlier grades.  Conceptual understanding Procedural skills and fluency Application With equal intensity Photo by Wokandapix| CC0

12 Standards for Mathematical Practice
Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them Reason abstractly and quantitatively Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others Model with mathematics Use appropriate tools strategically Attend to precision Look for and make use of structure Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning

13 Principles to Action – 8 High Leverage Teaching Practices
Establish mathematics goals to focus learning. Implement tasks that promote reasoning and problem solving. Use and connect mathematical representations. Facilitate meaningful mathematical discourse. Pose purposeful questions. Build procedural fluency from conceptual understanding. Support productive struggle in learning mathematics. Elicit and use evidence of student thinking. Principles to Actions

14 Do Your Instructional Materials Support These Shifts? How Do You Know?
Turn to a neighbor and discuss this question. Whole group sharing

17 What Did you Notice, What Did You Wonder?

18 Reviews of OER Ed Reports Reviews – Consumer report reviews of K-12 Mathematics Instructional Materials (full course or grade) OSPI OER Reviews - Reviews of Geometry or Int II, Algebra 1 or Int I, and 6th – 8th mathematics using the Achieve EQUIP rubric and Student Achievement Partner’s Rubric. How can these reviews support an instructional materials adoption or better alignment for existing instructional materials?
