4 Reading Standards for Literature:
Reading Standards for Literature: *I can ask and answer questions about a text I have read. *I can retell stories with understanding. *I can describe characters, settings, and events in a story. *I can point out words and phrases in text that show feeling. *I can tell the difference between fiction and nonfiction. *I can tell who is telling a story. *I can compare and contrast characters in stories. *I can read prose and poetry. 4 08/08/14

Reading Standards for Informational Text: *I can ask and answer questions about details in a text. *I can pick out the topic and supporting details. *I can tell how two parts of a story are connected. *I can ask and answer questions to figure out the meaning of words and phrases. *I can use text features to find information. *I can understand the difference between the information in a picture and in words. *I can use pictures and words to tell what a book is about. *I can tell what the author is thinking and why. *I can tell the things that are the same and different between two texts on the same topic. *I can read nonfiction. 4 08/08/14

6 15 Phonics and Foundational Skills
*I know that a sentence begins with a capital letter and ends with a period. *I can use word study and phonics skills to read words. *I know the spellings and the sounds of consonant digraphs and blends in 1-syllable words. *I can read two-syllable words by breaking them into smaller parts I already know. *I can read words with endings and irregularly spelled words. I can read with fluency, accuracy, purpose, expression, and understanding. *I can use context clues to correct my reading. I can reread if necessary. 15 08/08/14

7 Our district uses the Story Town series for shared reading
Our district uses the Story Town series for shared reading. You’ll find several helpful online resources on the website. During guided reading time, we’ll be using Story Town e-books, Big Universe e-books, as well as a variety of guided reading resources and picture/chapter books from the book room. We will be using Daily Five rotations for guided reading. 12 08/08/14

8 Students will be taking running record assessments to determine guided reading levels/groups at least 3 times a year. First graders will also be taking the PALS assessment 3 times a year to determine decoding skills. Students will be able to practice reading skills at an appropriate instructional level while in a guided reading group. Small group guided reading groups will be flexible. 15 08/08/14

9 Spelling First semester we will be focusing on high frequency words, as well as spelling words from our Harcourt reading series. We will be starting “Words Their Way” spelling word sorts second semester. Students’ spelling report card grade will be determined by how they spell commonly used words and words with spelling patterns in their everyday writing. Spelling will also be assessed on periodic writing samples. 15 08/08/14

10 Language Target Goals I can make good word choices when writing or speaking. I can print all uppercase and lowercase letters. I can use common, proper, and possessive nouns. I can use nouns and verbs that agree. I can use personal, possessive, and indefinite pronouns. I can use verbs to show when something happens. I can use articles, conjunctions, and prepositions.. I can use adjectives. I can give examples of the four types of sentences. I can capitalize days of the week, months of the year, and people’s names. I can use punctuation to end a sentence. I can use commas in dates and in a series. I can spell words with common spelling patterns. I can spell sight words. I can use context clues to figure out the meaning of a word or a phrase. I can use prefixes or suffixes to help me figure out the meaning of a word. I can identify root words. First graders will work on target goals during Daily Five and Writing Workshop. 6 08/08/14

I can write and tell how I feel about a text. I can write about a topic with facts and details. I can write a detailed story that has a beginning, a middle, and an end. I can stick to a topic. I can revise my writing. I can use technology to write and publish. I can write with others. I can answer questions by researching. 12 Number and Operations in Base Ten
I can count from any number to I can read and write numbers up to 120. I understand that two-digit numbers contain tens and ones. I know that 10 in ten ones, or a ten. I know that the numbers have a ten and some ones. I can tell how many tens and ones are in the multiples of ten. I can compare two 2-digit numbers. (less than, greater than, equal to) I can add a 2-digit number to a I can explain how to find 10 more or 10 less than a two-digit number. I can explain how to subtract multiples of 10 from other multiples of 10 up to 90. 8 08/08/14

13 Algebra and Operations
I can solve addition and subtraction word problems within 20. I can solve word problems by adding three numbers whose sum is less than or equal to 20. I can apply properties of operations as strategies to add and subtract. I can use addition facts to solve subtraction problems. I can count on to add. I can count back to subtract. I can fluently add and subtract within 10. I can use mental strategies to add and subtract within 20. I understand the meaning of the equal sign, and determine if equations involving addition and subtraction are true or false. I can determine the unknown whole number in an addition or subtraction equation relating three whole numbers. 8 08/08/14

14 Measurement and Data I can put objects in order by length. I can use one object to compare the lengths of two other objects. I can measure objects with nonstandard units. I can tell and write time to the hour and the half hour. I can tell and write time using analog and digital clocks. I can organize data into three groups or less. I can ask and answer questions about data. Geometry I know the difference between attributes that define a shape and attributes that describe a shape. I can build and draw shapes with certain attributes. I can build two-dimensional and three-dimensional figures from other figures. I can divide circles and rectangles into two or four equal parts. I can name the smaller parts. 8 08/08/14

16 I can categorize foods into groups and explain how these foods provide energy and material for body repair and growth. I can distinguish similarities and differences between organisms at the beginning & the end stages of their life cycles (including plants and organisms). I know that the scientific method is a way of solving problems with questions, hypothesis, evidence, thinking, and communication. I understand Earth’s place in the Universe. I can explain changes that occur around us in regards to matter, energy and their interactions. I know that all objects do not respond the same way to the processes applied to them. 17 08/08/14

17 I can recognize that each person needs to participate as an important part of our community.
I can describe how people are influenced by their experiences, families, and community. I can understand that goods and services from the past and present provide for needs and wants. I can understand the importance of valuing diversity. I can understand the parts of a map and how the environment can change. 17 08/08/14

18 Homework 18 Please encourage your child to practice math facts daily.
They should also practice vocabulary and spelling words that are in their book bags. First graders should consistently read 20 minutes every day. (This is our school policy at every grade level.) Our purpose for homework is to establish habits for learning. Students need to take responsibility for bringing their book bags (with books and word lists) back and forth to school. Let’s work together to give your child a strong foundation. 18

19 Technology 19 Students will be using iPads to:
Engage in personalized learning in math, language, and reading using Moby Max, Khan Academy, Epic or Big Universe Practice math and vocabulary skills Read online guided reading texts Build background in using Scholastic News and research sites Write using Book Creator app, etc. 19 08/08/14

20 TRIBES Howard is a TRIBES school. 21 Classroom Rules 21 Follow directions the first time they are given.
Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself. Give appreciations, not put-downs. Be respectful, be responsible, and be safe. 21 08/08/14

22 Classroom Behavior Be aware of expectations from our school’s PBIS plan and our school’s newsletters. Check your child’s planner’s behavior chart daily. Students will be able to earn rewards in the form of tickets that they can use to buy things at our auctions or to buy rewards at other times. 22 08/08/14
