Motivations and Causes of European Imperialism
Nationalism fueled a “quest for land” New Military Technologies = Easier to conquer other peoples Industrialization created demand for raw materials Industrialization also created demand for new markets (Sellers need buyers!) Missionaries hoped to convert others to Christianity Social Darwinism (Steam Ships, modern rifles, machine guns, artillery) Next to each of these bullets of notes I want you to tell me if the reason is a political, economic, or social motivation

Berlin Conference “Scramble for Africa” 1884-1885
7 European Powers met and decided who got what territories in Africa At the time of the conference, 80% of Africa remained under traditional and local control. What ultimately resulted was a hodgepodge of geometric boundaries that divided Africa into fifty irregular countries.
8
Did European Nations take into consideration the tribal boundaries that already existed in African before they carved it up? What negative impact might this have on Africa over the next 130 years?

The White Man’s Burden Take up the White Man’s burden—
Send forth the best ye breed— Go send your sons to exile To serve your captives' need To wait in heavy harness On fluttered folk and wild— Your new-caught, sullen peoples, Half devil and half child Take up the White Man’s burden In patience to abide To veil the threat of terror And check the show of pride; By open speech and simple An hundred times made plain To seek another’s profit And work another’s gain

1. How does this make you feel?
Take up the White Man’s burden— And reap his old reward: The blame of those ye better The hate of those ye guard— The cry of hosts ye humour (Ah slowly) to the light: "Why brought ye us from bondage, “Our loved Egyptian night?” Take up the White Man’s burden- Have done with childish days- The lightly proffered laurel, The easy, ungrudged praise. Comes now, to search your manhood Through all the thankless years, Cold-edged with dear-bought wisdom, The judgment of your peers! 1. How does this make you feel? 2. Do you agree with the idea of the White Man’s Burden? 3. Do you think the author really believes what he is writing? 4. What event do you think encouraged the author to write this poem? How does this make you feel? Do you agree with the idea of the White Man’s Burden? Do you think the author really believes what he is writing? What event do you think encouraged the author to write this poem?

Social Effects of Imperialism
Disruption of traditional cultures Spread of European culture (South Africa, India) Large European populations migrated to colonies Long lasting resentment between the colonized peoples and the colonizers Culture is a big part of being human. Review of Imperialism in Africa (Don’t have to write)
