4 The Jewel in the Crown The British East India Company held indirect rule in India since the mid-18th century. Hired sepoys, Indian soldiers who were paid to protect the company’s interests.

5 The Sepoy Mutiny 1857 – Rumors spread that the British were using cow and pig fat to grease their cartridges. Hindu’s and Muslims both have dietary restrictions that forbid this.

6 The Sepoy Mutiny Soldiers who refused to load their rifles were charged with mutiny and publicly humiliated. Sparked a rebellion Crushed by the British -> removed the BEIC and established direct control over India.

7 The Jewel in the Crown Queen Victoria became Empress of India and India became her “Jewel in the Crown” Although the rebellion failed it sparked nationalist feelings that would eventually help throw off British rule.
