Had 28 legions (5,000 in 1 Legion) Stabilized borders but could not conquer Germania established Pax Romana- peace in Rome Established Praetorian guard (Guarded Emperor)

Bad Emperors Tiberius- succeeds August, held daily executions
Caligula- gets “brain fever,” appoint horse as Consul, reinvades conquered countries, stabbed to death Nero – replaces stepdad as ruthless emperor at 17, Killed mother, persecution of Christians, him & friends burn down half of Rome

5 good emperors Nerva- First good emperor, elected by senate
Trajan- schools in Rome Hadrian- builds wall in Britainia Antoninus Pius- stabilized borders Marcus Aurelius- last good emperor, expand empire to height

Architecture Pantheon- building made to honor the Gods.
Aqueducts- concrete structure transported water from place to place. Colosseum- help 50,000 people, built (70 A.D.) under Emperor Titus Circus Maximus- chariot race track

Gladiators Typically slaves of Rome. A gladiator could win freedom
Gladiators fought against each other, and animals Ratairius- Gladiator who carried a net and a trident Secutor- gladiator with sword and shield

Spartacus Spartacus- captured by the Romans and forced to be a gladiator. Led uprising with 70,000 other slaves Eventually captured and crucified
