Can rail compete with this?
1990 £14,925 (£33k today’s prices), 216g/km, 0-62 = 8.1, 123mph, 940kg 36% less CO2 2015 £18,495, 139g/km, 0-62 = 8.3, 126mph, 990kg 44% Less cost
5
Is the rail sector threatened by disruptive technology?
6
Can rail keep up with the car industry? Embodied carbon
The big issues? Energy in use Can rail keep up with the car industry? Embodied carbon Highways or railways? Standardised tool for rail But is is up to date?
7
Can we make a difference?
Great Western Project embodied carbon in design. A steel thickness opportunity was identified and realised (achieving a 462 tCO2e reduction), as well as a foundation depth optimisation (achieving a 2,358 tCO2e reduction). Moreover the baseline exercise allowed quantifying the carbon reduction achieved by the move from concrete foundation to CHS with significant cost savings.
8
Example from the water sector
Anglian Water 1,000+ carbon models 32% embodied carbon reduction Significant cost savings 25% faster projects
9
Significant health impacts Overwhelming medical evidence
The big issues? Significant health impacts Overwhelming medical evidence Cities need a strategic approach to alternative fuels But do they have them? The future’s electric (or hydrogen, or something else)
10
The bigger issue?????
11
Social value through projects
Award winning Thameslink programme 159 job opportunities 83 new apprenticeships 56 previously unemployed local people in jobs Big social return on investment
12
Can stations become community hubs?
Can rail franchises engage more with communities? Stations as community hubs? Land use? Community engagement?
13
Can procurement help? “One of the most effective ways we found to deliver a sustainable Games is to embed sustainability upfront in the procurement process. Our Sustainable Sourcing Code is inspiring change amongst our suppliers, sponsors and licensees, who see the business advantages of sourcing sustainably” Paul Deighton – CEO London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games – April 2011
14
The industry delivers through its supply chain
65% world population ISO 20400 Coming mid 2017 85% world GDP 73% world CO2 emissions
15
We need to collaborate to develop our supply chains
16
And finally........ Sustainable rail has evolved over 20 years...
We don’t have another 20 years to make it business as usual...
