2 Tori’s video Write down a question you have about schools of rigor.

3 Disclaimer/ Resources
I’m still on this journey. I do not have all the answers. I have failed many times during this process. I have uploaded some resources for you to look at, use, and modify for your students. If you leave your address, I can add you to a shared folder with more resources. DMPS has resources when your building becomes a school of rigor. Each building has different action steps based that buildings needs. Marzano has many books and resources available.

4 What is a School of Rigor?
There is no formal answer. Schools that foster rigorous learning, collaboration and achievement. There are key characteristic and components The framework SRG Taxonomy of tasks Student centered classroom Many, many, many layers to this process. TLC coaches have videos from DMPS teacher. Use our resources.

5 Student Centered Classroom
The teacher no longer is the center of attention. All the knowledge doesn’t come from the teacher. It comes from the students learning from each other.

6 Experience a task. First thing we do before we start any lesson is get into our groups and define our roles. Look at the powerpoint small group roles and chart. RI.4.4 Success criteria: I can use resources to determine the meaning of a word or phrases in a text. Task: Working in your group you will create a placemat. define your word give an example of your word and how it relates to education draw a picture of your word list other words that would go with your word. Directions for the task: Each member states the learning target and task in their own words. Get all the materials needed. Each member states what section they are going to work on. Collaborate on the meaning. Make sure all members agree with each section. Use the resource provide or your own resources. Create your placemat. All members working at the same time. After 8 minutes will we take a gallery walk. Then revise if needed.

7 Group Thoughts and Reflection
Monitoring Success Criteria Adaptations Grouping Complexity Discuss in your group the key vocabulary words. Talk in your group about how you could use the placemat technique in other contents. Discuss student and teacher interactions. Similarities and differences to how you teach now.

8 Grouping 4 corners Colored sticks
New learning is best in groups of 2 and 3 Deepening learning is best in groups of 4. Grouping 4 corners Colored sticks Move to your color corner of the room. Whip share using one of these prompts. Name a new way you could use the placemat technique in your classroom. Share an aha moment with a vocabulary word. Share another way you could use the 4 corners or colored sticks in your classroom. Name the 3 things a teacher would monitor for. Share an idea of how you group students for learning. Share your question with the group. Organizing students for learning is always paired with another technique.

9 Tracking: Only when you are going to do something about it.
Play a vocabulary game called walk a mile. Get a white board and marker. Work together as a team or pairs to come up with the correct vocabulary word. Teacher reads definition. Students write down the correct word. Standards tracker- for tracking students on learning targets Growth tracker- for your own professional learning. Look and learns.

10 Action steps Learning Targets and Success Criteria

Provided backing 4. Frame qualifiers to include describing counterarguments Science and social studies is the easiest place to start.

12 Big Ideas/ Take Away/ Questions
This is a learning process. Change doesn’t happen over night. It’s very challenging and rewarding. Collaboration with colleagues is essential. You can not do this work on your own. PLC are very important in this process. Reflection on your question you wrote down before we started.
