1 Darwin’s Quick Points!

2 Survival of the Fittest
Darwin collected evidence over time to create his idea of evolution. From this evidence he created this theory of NATURAL SELECTION. This is sometimes referred to as SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST. His theory is based on 6 main points.

3 1) Overproduction More offspring are produced than can possibly survive. Examples: Fish lay millions of eggs at a time. Sea turtles: Lay from eggs (depending on the species. On average, 1 out of 100 survive to be a full grown turtle.

4 BABY SEA TURTLES! OMG! k

5 2) Competition Due to overproduction, organisms of the same species, as well as organisms of different species must compete for survival needs such as food, water, mates and a place to live.

6 INTERspecific competition - Competition between 2 different species.
(Ex. Cheetahs and Lions) INTRAspecific competition – Competition between 2 of the same species. (Ex. 2 male deer fight over 1 female deer).

7

8 3) Variation Differences occur among members of the same species
No 2 individuals are exactly alike. These variations are passed onto the next generation.

9 4) Survival of the Fittest
Natural Selection Individuals in a species with traits that give them an advantage are better able to adapt, survive and breed. Others die off without leaving offspring.

10 5) Speciation Origin of new species.
Over numerous years, new species arise by the inheritance of advantageous variations. When a type of species is produces that is significantly different from the original, it becomes a new species. A species can only reproduce with its own kind.

11

12 6) Adaptation An adaption is a variation that allows an organism to be better suited to its environment. Organisms that are better adapted to their environment are more ‘fit’, thereby increasing their chance of survival and successful reproduction. Adaptations are the result of natural selection.

13 How are polar Bears an Example of Adaptation?

14 Out of the 6 main points, we will be spending the most time with:
Adaptations Natural Selection Variation Speciation
