Article: Rubik's Cube Quest for a Speedy Solution Comes to an End
The author of this article is Jonathan Fidles He is a Technology reporter for BBC News This article is dated for August 11, 2010

Main Idea This toy was invented by an actual Hungarian architect in 1974 and his name was Erno Rubik After 30 years of trying to find the solution to the fastest way to solve a Rubix cube we finally figured out the answer

And the Special Number is...
Im not going to tell you. But I will tell you that there are more than 100 million starting positions So now we have to figure out all of those starting positions with the least number of moves

A Hopeless Problem To make it faster what these researchers did was that they split al of the possibilities into 2.2 billion groups. Each of these groups contained 20 billion different positions After a while they got it to go down to 56 million sets of 20 billion Each of these groups took 20 or 30 second to work out on a computer so they needed to use a supercomputer

A Helping Hand Then Google stepped in to help them with that because the reaserchers didnt have enough technology The cool part about this is that Google helped them find the answer but they never told anyone what machinery they used

Why? I picked this article because not only was it very recent but I thought it would be a great way to use math in a very famous “toy”that nost of us have problably used.

The Answer We now know for certain that the magic number is 20," said Professor Morley Davidson, a mathematician from Kent State University Most of them actually only take 15 or 19

New Questions Now the team of researchers which was composed by John Dethridge, an engineer from Google, Herbert Kociemba, a math teacher and Tomas Rokicki, a programmer from California, has decided that now with this dicovery they could figure out more math related problems using this toy.
