2 What is Mass media Mass media refers to all channels of communication that reach a large audience. Mass media include newspapers, magazines, radio, television, Internet etc….

3 radio HISTORY: Image: 1926 the first lasting U.S. radio network, nbc was Created by David Sarnoff. 1927 the cbs radio network was formed By 1930 – Golden age of radio Americans listened to their radios for music, drama, and comedy. Jack Benny and Bob Hope were popular

4 Used as an information tool
Radio cont: Used as an information tool Informed the American public during World War II. Franklin D. Roosevelt made a speech asking for a declaration of war against the Japanese. (After Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor)

5 First Radio Broadcast In 1920, the first radio broadcast took place in the US and this led to the birth of the modern mass media.

Philo Farnsworth transmitted first television picture (an image of a dollar sign) in 1927 By 1950’s television replaced radio New source of entertainment It became preferred source of information

7 The First Talking Movie
In 1927, the film “The Jazz Singer” was the first “talkie” and silent movie stars became memories.

8 INTERNET By year 2000, Internet changed how journalists researched/reported news. News/entertainment was now coming from Web sites Journalists used Internet to get their jobs done (research, interviews, work with photographers, editing etc.) Extra features such as Web logs, also known as blogs Created multiple platforms

9 Samuel Morse In 1835, Samuel Morse invented “Morse Code” and communication breaks the distance barrier.

10 The First Telegraph In 1843, the first telegraph and text communication breaks the distance barrier.

11 The Telephone In 1876, Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone and conversations break the distance barrier. People no longer need to be in the same room or same town to talk to one another.

12 The First Home Computers
In 1976, Apple introduced the first home computers.

13 Mobile Phones The first mobile phone was introduced in Japan in but became a mass media only in 1998 when the first downloadable ringtones were introduced in Finland.

14 Presentation assignment
Choose one of these topics (Media). Include background – how invention/event got here, what came first, etc. Important people – who they are, what they did, their role or roles Timeline – when it happened and what significance it had during that era Where it happened – how that culture influenced the development Why its important as a historical event How it influenced modern media. (this is your own interpretation, not something you research or find on internet)!!! Requirements: 10 slides minimum All research must be cited in MLA format (this will be on reference slide at end of power point) Save on flash drive or to cloud. Do not save to hard drive!!!! Due Tuesday February 9th, will be presenting it to class that day.
