Chapter 4.1- Earth’s Atmosphere
Pages 90-97
2
Earth’s Atmosphere Atmosphere- a thin layer of gases that surround Earth Atmospheric Gases: 78% Nitrogen, 21% Oxygen, 1% other gases Solids: dust, salt, pollen Liquids: water
3
Awesome Atmosphere Copy down the following statements & write whether or not you AGREE OR DISAGREE. Air is empty space. ______ Earth’s atmosphere is important to living organisms. ___________
4
Troposphere Lowest layer Where I live Weather occurs here
Contains 99% of the water vapor found in the atmosphere & 75% of atmospheric gases Extends 8-15 km above Earth’s surface (~6.2 miles) Higher you go the colder it gets because sun warms the surface
5
Stratosphere 15-50 km above Earth
Constains the OZONE LAYER that protects us from sun’s UV rays is found here jets fly here The higher you go the warmer it gets because of the ozone layer absorbs solar radiation
6
Mesosphere 50-85 km above Earth
Meteors burn up in this layer b/c of friction with air particles (called shooting stars) Temperature decrease as you go higher in the mesosphere (COLDEST LAYER)
7
Thermosphere Broadest layer of the atmosphere 85 -600 km
very high temperatures C auroras, northern lights Ionosphere – located here, a layer of electrically charged gas particles which allows radio waves to travel across the country
8
Exosphere outermost layer of the atmosphere 600 km - outer space
few molecules exist in exosphere and thermosphere they have extremely high energy & temps because 1st layer to receive the suns energy space shuttle and satellites pressure & density are so low that gas molecules RARELY bump into each other YOU DON”T HAVE TO WRITE THIS DOWN- Jason-2 satellite carries tools & sensors to help study ocean.
9
When you are finished: Start your Describing Earth’s Atmosphere Lesson Outline. Use your textbook, starting on page 572 to read and look for your answers. This is NOT homework yet.
10
Temperature & Altitude in Atmosphere
Please look at Figure 7 on page 578. Carefully read the x and y axis of the graph. Answer these questions: Describe what happens to the temperature in the troposphere when you get higher? Which temperature pattern is most like the troposphere’s? What happens to the temperature as you get higher in the thermosphere?
11
Air Pressure & Altitude
Turn to Page 578 in the text Read the paragraph on air pressure and altitude Look at Figure 6 & read the caption ON THE BACK OF YOUR COLORFUL FOLDABLE Copy down the picture of how air molecules get less as you go higher Answer the Reading Check Question in a complete sentence.
12
Atmosphere Foldable Please take out your atmosphere foldable and continue working This will be due by the end of the period.
