BELLWORK Create a tree map Categorize each system of government we have learned about. Give an example in history for each type of democracy

2 Government is rooted in the concept of State.
What is the concept of State? A community of persons Permanently occupying a definitive portion of a territory Has a government system that manages the people People obey in return for protection People obey + Defense = Social Contract

3 What types of governments are there? Where did we take our ideas from?

4 AUTOCRACY: a government in which one
AUTOCRACY: a government in which one person has all the power(two main types) MONARCHY One ruling body (king and/or queen) Ruler usually holds all the power Sometimes shares power Sometimes represent the citizens How is power gained and maintained? Inherited (passed down) Election by the people Divine right (granted by deity) What are some examples?

5 DICTATORSHIP (aka Authoritarian)
One leader has absolute power (dictator) Controls all aspects of citizens’ lives If there are different branches of power, the dictator controls what they do Never represent the citizens How is power gained and maintained? Inherited (passed down) Taken by force (Totalitarian) Constitutional (emergency power) What are some examples?

6 DEMOCRACY Rule by the consent of the people
Often includes a Separation of Powers Functions by Social Contract (Constitution) Citizens have established legal rights Natural rights are rights that cannot be taken away by human laws Unalienable rights are granted to us by our creator (Thomas Jefferson) Constitutional Rights are natural and unalienable rights that are protected by the Constitution

8 HOW ARE THEY ORGANIZED? WHERE IS THE CONTROLLING POWER? Unitary the central government maintains most or all power Confederal An alliance of sovereign nation-states that mutually benefit from the alliance Federal Power is shared between the national government and local governments
