1 Cells Cristal Locke

2 Robert Hooke Identified and named the cell in the 1600’s.

3 Cells All things are made up of cells
Cells are the smallest living units

4 Cells Grow Reproduce Consume energy Change energy Excrete waste

5 Cells Nucleus Cytoplams Cell membrane

6 Plant Cells Cell Wall (the outside of the membrane)
Cell Wall is made of cellulose which makes the cell stiff (Tree trunk and crunch of carrot)

7 Nucleus Control center of the cell Where the cell begins reproduction
Contains chromosomes that determine hereditary traits

8 Cytoplasm Where special functions of the cell are carried on
Structure and role changes from one type of cell to another Nucleus controls the cytoplasm’s function

9 Organelle Any part of a cell with a specific job to do
One of these is called the mitochondria It supplies the cell with needed energy

10 Cell Membrane Gives the cell its shape
Controls what passes into and out of the cell

11 Plant Cells Another unique component is chloroplasts
They are small, green, and shaped like footballs They give the plant its green color and help with photosynthesis

12 Cell Division - Mitosis
Begins in the nucleus The nucleus becomes two (nuclei) New cell grows until it is about the same size as the old cell.

13

14 Mitosis First Phase: Prophase Nucleus becomes
shorter and fatter , then duplicates themselves Second Phase: Metaphase Chromosomes line up Across the nucleus of the cell and begin pulling apart Third Phase: Anaphase Chromosomes pull apart Fourth Phase: Telophase Cytoplasm is divided

15 Cell Needs Water Nutrients Other materials

16 Cell Classification Plants Animals Protists

17 Single-Cell Organisms
It has a euglena which helps in photosynthesis If no light – it looks for food like an animal Pond Water
