Bad Religion Frank Ocean

Lyrics Taxi driver You're my shrink for the hour Leave the meter running It's rush hour So take the streets if you wanna Just outrun the demons, could you? He said "allahu akbar", I told him don't curse me "But boy you need prayer", I guess it couldn't hurt me If it brings me to my knees It's a bad religion This unrequited love To me it's nothing but A one-man cult And cyanide in my styrofoam cup I could never make him love me Never make him love me Love Love Taxi driver I swear I've got three lives Balanced on my head like steak knives I can't tell you the truth about my disguise I can't trust no one And you say "allahu akbar", I told him don't curse me "But boy you need prayer", I guess it couldn't hurt me If it brings me to my knees It's a bad religion This unrequited love To me it's nothing but A one-man cult And cyanide in my styrofoam cup I could never make him love me Never make him love me Love Love It's a bad religion To be in love with someone Who could never love you I know Only bad religion Could have me feeling the way I do

Questions How this song make you feel?
This song personally makes me feel like love could never work out, so it’s upsetting but at the same time there’s nothing you can do about it. Where do you picture this taking place? I personally picture the song taking place in New York in the wintertime, in a taxi. What’s your favourite lyric and why? “This unrequited love, to me its nothing but a one man cult” The whole song is based off of unrequited love and this lyric really speaks for the whole song to me. Who is the song about? The song is more than likely about someone who he loves who doesn’t love him back, or possibly an ex he hasn’t gotten over so he still loves them. He uses the taxi driver as his ‘shrink’ to discuss this situation possibly. Is there an overpowering theme or attitude in this song? Unrequited love, the idea of loving someone and them not returning the feelings.

Message of song Bad religion to me is a song about losing a lover or trying to get over someone who doesn’t love you back. The song depicts Frank speaking with a taxi driver, discussing his problems with the taxi driver. The ‘theme’ of the song is all about the unrequited love that Frank Ocean is experiencing or has experienced. The lover is depicted as a male and the taxi drivers use of "Allahu akbar", meaning, ‘God is greater’ is often seen as a regard to Frank’s love for the male, saying that perhaps he needs god. “Cyanide in my Styrofoam cup.” Is a reference to the “People’s Temple” cult, in the end all the members were killed by their leader by drinking cyanide, this message meaning that this unrequited love could be as self destructive as joining a cult (“a one man cult”). You lose sight of reality and the bigger picture, because of the obsession behind the person or the idea of a relationship with them.
