2 The UK The UK is one of the smallest countries in the world. The total area of the country is about 244 thousand sq km. It occupies the British Isles, which lie off the north-west coast of Europe. It borders Ireland, France, the Netherlands, Belgium and Scandinavian countries. The UK is made of four historic parts: English, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

3 The capital of the country is London.
The Largest cities are: Edinburgh, Glasgow, Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, Belfast, Cardiff, Newcastle and Sheffield. The population of the UK is about 59 million people.

4 The highest peak is Ben Nevis in Scotland

5 The largest river is the Severn

6 The largest lake is Lough Neagh in Nothern Ireland

7 The flag The flag of the UK is called the Union Flag or the Union Jack. The Union Jack is a combination of the crosses of three patron saints of the country:

The white diagonal cross of St Andrew for Scotland on a blue background. The red diagonal cross of St Patrick for Ireland on a white ground.

9 The State Emblem The State Emblem of the UK shows the union of its four parts. The two emblems of English lions symbolise the leading role of England in this Union. The shield is supported by two mythic animals: the English lion and the Scottish unicorn. The emblem is headed with a crowned lion, the symbol of power and might.

10 The floral symbol of England is the Red Rose

11 The Scottish emblem is the thistle

12 The Welsh emblem is a vegetable: a leek ( or on occasion, the flower, the daffodil)
