9 Our Role Today, the Mission of Camp Tillicum is to operate a not-for-profit camp for boys and girls in facilities that foster healthful recreation. Tillicum is a life experience that offers a special and safe place where youth can share common experiences, realize new abilities, form friendships and enjoy the beauty of nature. Camp Tillicum has been, and will continue to be, a destination centre for youth-oriented programs, education, and personal development. Through our partnership with the YMCA we have been able to introduce the camp experience to numerous children. Many of these children wouldn't have had the opportunity to take part in such experiences, due to financial constraints, if not for Tillicum.

10 Quality camp experiences help children to develop skills; social, physical, and mental, promote healthy active living, and build character. For nearly 90 years, Camp Tillicum has been providing youth in our area with this opportunity in a beautiful outdoor setting.

11 History and Mandate Purchased in 1926 by Edith Palmer and James Nightingale. In 1949, Camp Tillicum was generously gifted to the Rotary Club of North Bay so that the club could continue to provide the camp experience to boys and girls. The Rotary Club turned the property over to Camp Tillicum Inc. A partnership was established with the YMCA so that the area would continue to be used by youth throughout the summer months. Camp Tillicum was purchased in 1926 by James Nightingale and Edith Palmer after they searched Lake Nipissing for an area in which boy scouts could enjoy summertime water and camping adventure. Over the years, through the help of Rotarian, Tom Palmer, the camp developed and grew. In 1949 James and Edith generously gifted Camp Tillicum to the Rotary Club of North Bay so that the club may continue to provide a camp for boys and girls. The Rotary Club turned the property management over to Camp Tillicum Inc After leasing the camp to the Department of National Defence in the late 70s, Camp Tillicum Inc developed a partnership with our local YMCA so that the area could continue to be used by youth throughout the summer.

12 Since 1949… Top right: an older picture of Camp Tillicum. You’ll notice the building is quite simple and there is no dock or lifeguard hut Bottom Right: Is the arts and crafts hall which, as we’ll discuss in a bit, will be the home of our new facility but I wanted to share this image of all of the signatures which date back decades. We will look to preserve some of the oldest signatures as it speaks to the legacy of this camp. Left: and aerial shot of the camp. Essentially anything with a green roof is on camp property.
