2 Yorkshire is the UK’s biggest county
Yorkshire Day – 1st August It is also called ‘God’s Own County’ due to its vast areas of unspoilt countryside.

3 History In the 9th Century, the city of York was invaded by the Vikings and renamed Jórvík. The War of the Roses took place in the 15th century. The House of York (Yorkshire) fought against the House of Tudor (Lancashire) for power over the throne of England. 18th and 19th centuries saw the Industrial Revolution, in which West Yorkshire in particular was very important - Bradford was ‘the wool capital of the world’.

6 Key Places Whitby – the setting of Bram Stoker’s gothic novel, ‘Dracula’. Howarth – Brontë country. Yorkshire has two National Parks: the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors.

7 Bingley A small town in West Yorkshire.

8 Leeds Leeds has a population of 751,500, making it much bigger than Oviedo, which has a population of 190,800. It is the UK’s 3rd biggest city, after London and Birmingham. There are 3 universities and students make up 1/3 of the population. Leeds United Football Club – they have a famous rivalry with Manchester United and Chelsea. They won the English Premier League 3 times and have a huge number of fans.

9 Sports 2012 Olympics: If Yorkshire were an independent country it would have finished an incredible twelfth on the league table in the 2012 Olympics. Yorkshire sportsmen and women won 7 Gold, 2 Silver and 3 Bronze medals. The first stage of the 2014 Tour de France starts from Leeds Town Hall on Saturday 5th July 2014, then will pass through 190 km of North Yorkshire countryside

10 Food Famous Yorkshire foods include Yorkshire pudding, Parkin and Wensleydale Cheese Fish and Chips Curry - Yorkshire is home to the world’s largest Indian restaurant.

11 Yorkshire Accent & Dialect
A strong Yorkshire accent is called a ‘Broad’ Yorkshire accent. Stronger in isolated areas and amongst the older generations It is often caricatured in popular culture The use of ‘us’ instead of ‘me’ and missing out ‘the’, for example, ‘give us book’ = ‘give me the book’.
