Purpose
Auden’s purpose of this line was to start off his poem with a dark/sad mood. He use diction to really be straightforward on the mood of this poem.

Style -uses hyperbole which is used to make something over exaggerating
He also uses juxtaposition by putting the words Love and raging by each other
Purpose
Auden very complexed poetry techniques to give the reader the opportunity to make connections with the poem. He portrays Hyperbole and juxtaposition.

Sense - Uses tone to cause confusion at the end of the poem/questioning

Auden use a questioning tone to leave the reader questioning the meaning of this poem
