3 Line #11-12 “Who nurtured in that fine tradition, Predicted the result”
Main Points Senses Calm Angry Peaceful Poem Deliverance So What The category of senses is being affected. This helps the reader understand the poem by making the reader aware of the deliverance Mirko’s Slide

4 Line #13 “Guessed love by nature suited to…”
Main Points Structural Balance Literary techniques Nature Love Abstract Concrete Thought Build? Purpose So What Auden’s structure and techniques open a path to the reader in order for them to incorporate a “plot - like” understanding of the poem, also developing concrete ideas inside of the abstract ones! 5 Line #15 “That human ligaments could do so”
Main Points Human Ligaments Symbolic Meaning Positive Negative Switch-up Word References So What This quote emphasizes a plot change in the entire poem. “Human Ligaments” may represent a categorical sense of negativity! Mirko’s Slide

6 Line #14 “The intricate Ways of Guilt”
Main Points Use of Diction Meaning Use of Words Intricate To be complicated Poem Complex Vocabulary So What It was felt that the artist was trying to say that humanity have very complicated and abstract ways of suffering when a wrong is committed.

7 Line# 2 “Of sadness of the creature”
Main Point Style - Using mood to express a certain emotion Uses diction - Using the word sadness actually showing, what type of emotion he was trying to express Purpose Auden’s purpose of this line was to start off his poem with a dark/sad mood. He use diction to really be straightforward on the mood of this poem.

8 Line# 7 “Love raging for the personal glory”
Main Point Style -uses hyperbole which is used to make something over exaggerating He also uses juxtaposition by putting the words Love and raging by each other Purpose Auden very complexed poetry techniques to give the reader the opportunity to make connections with the poem. He portrays Hyperbole and juxtaposition.

9 Line# 19-20 “To hunger, work illegally, And be anonymous?”
Main Point Sense - Uses tone to cause confusion at the end of the poem/questioning Purpose Auden use a questioning tone to leave the reader questioning the meaning of this poem

10 Line# 1 “Our hunting fathers told the story”
Main Point Senses Imagery Purpose Already being introduced with the auditory image, know that time is presented as “hunting fathers” can date all the way in the past.

11 Line# 5 “Saw the lion’s intolerant look”
Main Point Senses Symbolism Tone Purpose Surprising that a lion symbolizing strength and leadership can be suddenly frail just by the appearance of the animal.

12 Line# 10 “The rightness of a god”
Main Point Senses Symbolism Belief ? Purpose God can be interpreted in many ways but usually is symbolized as a good way of having faith. When the term rightness is used it is open-minded because to many there are different opinions as what is considered to be the right thing .
