2 Environment Targeted Audience Objectives Computer lab 5th grade
Students will go through simulations individually Objectives Students will gain knowledge of the 5 senses of the human body. Students will be able to identify which sense has what function to our bodies. Given information about our 5 senses, students shall be able to perform with 95% accuracy when filling out diagrams.

3 Why is having knowledge of our five senses important?
We see We touch We smell We listen We Taste!

4 The 5 Senses of our bodies allow us to do what we do on a daily basis
The 5 Senses of our bodies allow us to do what we do on a daily basis! Choose which sense you would like to learn about first. Pay attention! There will be a quiz at the end of each sense section.

5 Home The 5 Senses Eye Sight Touch Smell Hearing Taste

6 Home Eye Sight

7 Home Click on each word within the diagram to practice learning the parts and functions of the eye. Click on quiz at the bottom when ready! retina lens optic nerve cornea iris Skip to quiz

8 The optic nerve Home The optic nerve connects the eye to the brain.
The optic nerves carries impulses and can sense light.

9 Home The lens The lens can change shape to focus on things in the distance or close up. The lens allows a sharp image to become produced by the retina.

10 The cornea Home The eyes outermost layer
It is the clear surface that covers the front of the eye. The cornea helps shield the eye from harmful matter. It controls and focuses the entry of light.

11 The Retina Home The retina is the innermost part of the eyeball.
It receives the image produced by the lens. It contains rods and cons that are sensitive to light.

12 Home The Iris The colored disk of the eye.

13 Home Quiz Directions* Part A: Use the eye diagram that you have to fill out the parts of the eye using the word bank from the module. Part B: Answer a series of true/false questions by clicking either “true” or “false”.

14 Home Quiz part A Word Bank Cornea retina lens iris optic nerve

15 The cornea receives the image produced by the lens.
Home Quiz part B True or False: The cornea receives the image produced by the lens. TRUE FALSE

16 OOPS!! This is incorrect The retina is what receives the image produced by the lens.

17 YES!! You are correct The retina is what actually receives the image produced by the lens.

18 The colored part of the eye is called the lens.
Home True or False: The colored part of the eye is called the lens. TRUE FALSE

19 OOPS!! This is incorrect. The lens is not the colored part of the eye, look back to the diagram if needed.

20 YES! You are correct. The statement is false, the iris is the colored part of the eye.

21 The Optic Nerve sends signals to the brain from the eye.
Home True or False: The Optic Nerve sends signals to the brain from the eye. TRUE FALSE

22 This is incorrect. The optic nerve does send signals to the brain from the eye.

23 You are correct! The optic nerve does send signals to the brain from the eye.

24 *Congratulations you have finished eye sight!

25 Home Touch

26 Have you heard of nerves?!
Home Have you heard of nerves?! There are 20 different nerve endings that send messages to the brain. This is how we feel if something is hot or cold!

27 Home Your sense of touch is the very first sense to develop when you are a baby. Your skin is the largest organ in the body.

28 Home Facts While your other senses are found in one spot, sense of touch is found everywhere. There are about 100 touch receptors in each fingertip. You have more pain nerve endings than any other. Shivering is a way to keep your body warmer.

29 Good Luck Quiz Directions* Home
You will receive a series of questions about “touch”. Click on the word response to submit your answer and find out if you are correct! Good Luck

30 1.) How many different types of nerve endings are in the body?
Home 1.) How many different types of nerve endings are in the body? 100 b) 50 c) 20 d) 1,000

31 Sorry! 100 is too many, try again!

32 Sorry! 50 is too many, try again!

33 Sorry! 1,000 is too many, try again!

34 Yes! There are in fact 20 different type of nerve endings in the body!

35 Home True or False: Shivering is a way to keep the body cold when the body overheats. TRUE FALSE

36 Sorry! This is incorrect. Shivering is actually a way to keep your body warm when in cold conditions.

37 Yes! You are correct. Shivering is actually a way to keep the body warm when in cold conditions.

38 Your sense of touch is found only in your hands.
Home True or False: Your sense of touch is found only in your hands. TRUE FALSE

39 SORRY!! This is incorrect.
Your sense of touch is found everywhere in the body!

40 YES!! You are correct. Your sense of touch is actually found everywhere in the body!

41 *Congratulations you have finished touch!

42 Home Smell

43 Home What’s that smell?! Smells are recognized because each smell molecule fits into a nerve cell like a lock and a key. These cells send signals to the brain which are then interpreted into that sweet smell of roses, or that freshly baked pie.

44 Home Fun Smelly Facts* You can tell the difference between 4,000-10,000 different scents! Your sense of taste has a lot to do with your sense of smell, because when foods smell good you want to eat them! As you grow older your sense of smell gets worse, so children have a better sense of smell.

45 Home Parts of your nose! Nostrils- the two openings or holes of the nose Septum- the wall that separates the nostrils which is made of cartilage. Nasal Cavity- behind your nose, in the middle of the face which helps you to breathe.

46 Home Quiz Directions* Y0u will receive a series of questions about “smell”. Click on the letter OR true/false to submit your response.

47 The pores in your nose is what first recognizes a smell.
Home True or False: The pores in your nose is what first recognizes a smell. TRUE FALSE

48 Sorry! This is incorrect. The nerves in the nose send signals to the brain to interpret the smell!

49 Yes! This is correct, it is false! The nerves in the nose send signals to the brain to interpret the smell!

50 Which part of your nose separates the two nostrils?
Home Which part of your nose separates the two nostrils? a.) septum b.) nasal cavity c.) pores

51 SORRY!! This is incorrect.
The nasal cavity is not what separates the nostrils.

52 SORRY!! This is incorrect.
The pores are not what separates the nostrils.

53 YES!! You are correct. The septum is what separates the nostrils.

54 *Congratulations you have finished smell!

55 Home Hearing

56 Home “What did you say?” When an object makes a sound, it sends vibrations through the ear. The vibrations are canaled into your ear canal by your outer ear. As the vibrations move to the middle of the ear, they hit the eardrum. Then, the eardrum vibrates the hammer, anvil, and stirrup. The stirrup passes the vibrations into the cochlea.

57 Home *Look over the diagram of the ear. After reading about the function of these parts, locate where each of them are.

58 Home *Fun Facts The ear continues to hear different sounds while you sleep. The ear helps you with balance. Ear wax helps protect your ear from infections.

59 Home *Quiz Directions You will receive a series of true/false and multiple choice questions. Click on the word of the correct to answer to submit your response.

60 Home True or False: The stirrup is the first part of the ear to be hit by sound, or “vibrations”. TRUE FALSE

61 SORRY!! This is incorrect.
The stirrup is not the first part of the ear to be hit by sound, or “vibrations”.

62 YES!! You are correct. The eardrum is actually what gets hit by the sounds, or “vibrations” first.

63 Ear wax is used as protection to the ear.
Home True or False: Ear wax is used as protection to the ear. TRUE FALSE

64 Oops! This is incorrect. The statement is true, ear wax does in fact protect the ear from bacteria, infections, etc.

65 YES! You are correct. This is true, ear wax does in fact protect the ear from bacteria, infections, etc.

66 *Congratulations you have finished hearing!

67 Home Taste

68 Why do foods taste different?
Home Why do foods taste different? Your tongue and roof of mouth are covered with thousands of taste buds. When you eat, saliva breaks down your food. This causes your taste buds to send messages to the brain Your brain tells you what flavors you are tasting!

69 Yummy Facts! Home You have almost 10,000 taste buds in your mouth.
Girls have more taste buds than boys. Taste is the weakest of the five senses.

70 Taste Buds Home Salty is stimulated mostly by sodium.
Sweet is stimulated mostly by sugar. Sour is stimulated mostly by acids. Bitter is mostly stimulated by quinine.

71 Home *Look over the location of the taste buds, once you are ready, start the quiz! Skip to quiz

72 Home *Quiz Directions Part A: Fill in the tastes in each blank of your tongue diagram using the word bank from the module. Part B: You will receive a series of true/false questions. Click on the words true or false to submit your answer.
