Introduction The Subject: Within this lesson students will learn about the primary and secondary colors, mixing colors, values, tints and shades. This lesson is an introduction for the lesson “Color Wheel Clowns” found on the website Deepspacesparkle.com. “Color Wheel Clowns” is the studio production portion of this lesson. Working with paint, students will get to be the experimenters that mix secondary colors and work with values and tints as they create colorful clown paintings. Introduction cont. Grade Level: 2nd Grade, The Symbol-Making Stage. Learning Objectives and Standards: The students will visually depict “Color Wheel Clowns” that are draw with black oil pastel on 12”x18” white paper, that show the art elements; line, shape, pattern and color, and are drawn using imaginative and observational skills (2nd grade; 3PR, Create artworks based on imagination and observation of familiar objects and scenes). The students will visually demonstrate knowledge and craft of mixing colors, in their “Color Wheel” Clowns” to create new secondary colors and tints when given red, yellow, blue and white tempera paint (2nd grade; 1PR, Demonstrate increasing skill and craft in the use of art tools and materials with attention to their diverse qualities). 6 The Primary Colors The primaries are three colors of the rainbow that can not be made by mixing colors together. The primaries are and Red Blue Yellow Blue Blue

7 The Secondary Colors The secondaries are three colors of the rainbow that you can make. These colors are made by mixing two different primaries together. The secondaries are and Orange Green Purple

8 Mixing Colors Two different primary colors can be mixed together to make the secondaries. + = = + + =

10 Value Any color can become lighter or darker.
This change in color from light to dark is called a value change. Any of the new colors made are called values. Dark Light

11 Shades + = To make a color darker you add black to the color.
The more black that is added, the darker the color becomes. This new and darker color is called a shade. + =

12 Tints + = To make a color lighter you add white to the color.
The more white that is added, the lighter the color becomes. This new and lighter color is called a tint. Did you know that pink is actually a tint of the color red? + =
