2 Teacher Notes First Challenge: Second Challenge: Each group will need:
Use 3 regular copy or construction paper, not card stack Fold each paper into the three shapes and secure with tape Slowly pile the same size books on top of each shape You can view this on this site: Second Challenge: Each group will need: Pieces of regular copy or construction paper, identical books, ruler, scissor and tape Allow students to brainstorm how to cut, fold, roll, crinkle, etc. paper to make supports no bigger than 2 inches high Have groups choose one design and build a set of supports Slowly place one book at a time on top of supports. Must hold for 10 seconds. See which design holds most books.

11 Science Behind It The cylinder can support the most books because it’s walls don’t have any edges. The force of the books cannot become concentrated in a particular area. The load is distributed evenly. In other words, all parts of the cylinder are sharing the load of the books. All parts of the cylinder, therefore, contribute to it’s overall strength until it collapses. The square and triangle deform more easily. They shift the weight of the books to their edges and corners, which makes the walls collapse. They are unable to carry weight only at their edges.

You can cut, roll, twist, rip, bend, crumple, or fold paper Your group will decide on a design and build the set of supports which can only be 2 inches high or shorter The book will need to be supported for 10 seconds You may not touch your book once it is released

15 Remember Paper is thin and weak. Or is it? You can stiffen your paper by folding or rolling it into a column. But to support the most weight, you have o turn the column so it is perpendicular to the pressure.
