MESSAGE PREACHED BY CHRIST
Cards 39-43 MESSAGE PREACHED BY CHRIST The devil tried hard to tempt Jesus. But Jesus had come into the world to conquer the devil, not to worship him. On the third temptation Jesus said, “Get thee behind me, Satan. It is written in the Bible, “Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and Him only shalt thou serve.” The devil saw that Jesus resisted all his temptations. After this, the Devil gave up his hopeless task and for a time he left Jesus alone. Now Jesus was ready to begin His work, From then on, Jesus began to preach, “Repent for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.” (Matt. 4:17)

NAME THE TWELVE APOSTLES
Peter NAME THE TWELVE APOSTLES Andrew James John After the temptation in the wilderness, angels came and ministered to Jesus. He had won the battle over the prince of darkness; He was not tricked by the wiles of the devil. He was ready now to begin His public ministry. In past ages, great teachers have had followers who spent much time with the teacher to learn from him. These followers are called “disciples” or learners. John the Baptist had many disciples who followed him. It came time for Jesus to choose His disciples. Jesus, of course, was the greatest Teacher of all ages, and He would have many disciples. Among the disciples there would be twelve men who Jesus wanted as His special helpers; they would be called Apostles. Jesus knew that He was going to return to His heavenly home when He had finished His work on earth, so He wanted to prepare and train these Apostles to carry on His work after He went back to heaven. Because they were specially chosen by Jesus and sent out to do a special work for Him, they are called the Twelve Apostles. Jesus did not choose all twelve of them at one time, but day by day He called them to Himself and to a life of service. Philip Bartholomew Matthew Thomas Thaddaeus James (son of Alphaes) Simon (the Zealot) Judas Iscariot

THE APOSTLE WHO BETRAYED JESUS
Now Judas was the treasurer of the little band of Jesus’ apostles and therefore had charge of the money. He had not always been honest and had at times helped himself from the money bag. Yet for nearly three years he had been among the group of Jesus’ closest followers, listening to Him, watching His wonderful deeds and learning from Him. It was sad that he did not live up to Jesus’ hopes for him when He first called him to be an apostle. Some time before the Last Supper, Judas had gone to the chief priests and had asked, “How much will you give me if I betray Jesus to you? “Thirty silver coins,” they said. From that time Judas kept on the lookout for an opportunity to betray his master. The chief priests and elders wanted Jesus arrested secretly, for they feared that if they took Him openly, there would be a riot among the people. THE APOSTLE WHO BETRAYED JESUS When the Passover meal, that Last Supper, ended, Jesus and the disciples sang a hymn and went to the Garden of Gethsemane, which was near the foot of the slopes of the Mount of Olives. Here Jesus said to some of the apostles, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” After returning from speaking to the apostles the third time a crowd of soldiers came into the garden. Among them was Judas. He had given them a signal, saying, “the man I kiss is the one you are after. Go up and seize Him and lead Him away safely.” Judas went up to Jesus and said, “Hail, master!” and kissed Him. Do you betray the Son of Man with a kiss, Judas?” asked Jesus. Then He stepped forward and asked the soldiers, “Who do you seek?” “Jesus of Nazareth,” they answered. “I am He,” replied Jesus.

THE APOSTLE WHO DENIED JESUS
John and Peter went to the temple to see what would happen to Jesus. John went inside the gates at the temple, but Peter stood outside where it was cold and dark. “Let that man in,” John said to a girl who watched the gate. The girl opened the gate for Peter. “Are you one of Jesus’ helpers?” she asked. “No,” said Peter, “I don’t know Him!” The servants inside the gate had made a fire. Peter went to stand beside the fire to get warm. A servant said to him, “Are you one of Jesus’ followers? You talk like they do.” “Of course not,” said Peter. “I don’t even know Him!” Someone else said, “Didn’t I see you out here in the garden with Jesus when He was arrested?” “No,” said Peter, “I don’t know the man!” It was starting to get light. Just them a rooster began to crow! Peter then remembered what Jesus had said, “Before the rooster crows you will say you don’t know Me three times.” Peter was so sad, he began to cry.

THE APOSTLE WHO DOUBTED
When Jesus appeared in the upper room, after His resurrection, one of the apostles was not there. That one was Thomas. When the others told Thomas that they had seen the Lord, he said, “Unless I see the print of the nails, and put my finger into the nail holes, and trust my hand into the wound in His side, I will not believe.” After eight days, it happened that the disciples were together again in the same room, with the doors shut. This time Thomas was with them. Again Jesus stood in the midst of them and said gently, “Peace be unto you.” Turning to Thomas, Jesus said, “Reach out your finger, and put it into the nail holes in my hand. Reach out your hand, and trust it into my side, and believe.” Thomas could doubt no longer. He said, “My Lord, and my God!” Jesus said to him, “Thomas, you have believed because you have seen me. Blessed are those who have not seen, and yet have believed.”
