Aim: What causes the moon to show phases?
Topic: Unit 8 Earth in Space Main Idea: Moon Phases
4
1) What portion of the moon is always illuminated by the sun?
One half of the moon is always lit.
5
2) Can we always see the entire illuminated portion of the moon?
We don’t always see the entire lit portion.
6
3b) What is the length of the moon’s revolution period?
It takes 27 1/3 days.
7
4) Explain why we see only one side of the moon?
This is because the moon rotates and revolves at the same rate.
8
5) Explain what is meant by the term “phases of the moon”.
These are the different shapes of the lit portion of the moon.
9
6) Explain what causes the phases of the moon.
They are caused by the revolution of the moon around the earth.
10
7) Explain what causes the apparent rising and setting of the moon.
It is caused by the rotation of the earth.
11
8) Explain why we are not able to see the new moon.
This is because the lit half of the moon is not facing the earth.
12
9) Name the four principle phases of the moon.
Full, new, first quarter, third (last) quarter.
13
10) Explain why it takes the moon 29 ½ days to go through its phases, but only 27 1/3 days to make a complete revolution. As the moon is revolving around the earth the earth is also revolving around the sun and it takes a little time for the moon to catch up to finish the phases.
