Chinese kings ruled with the blessing of the Gods (Mandate of Heaven) Kings were expected to rule according to the proper way (the Dao) in order to keep the gods pleased Natural disasters, bad harvests, ineffective rule by the king meant that the “Mandate of Heaven” had been lost and the current dynasty could be overthrown Turn to p. 88 study the “Dynastic Cycle” chart in the bottom left hand corner and make a “Dynastic Cycle” sketch in your notes.
