session one As we work through this session, remember to take opportunities to encourage interaction from the participants. We have much we can learn from each other and we are keen to create a learning community as we go through the training.

Crossing London Encouraging Leaders Equipping Christians
Engaging Communities Encountering Jesus Empowering Prayer Introduce yourself briefly. Explain that this Sharing Jesus Training Course is part of the Crossing London initiative. Briefly talk through the 5 main streams. Please check before the session and see what are the latest mission opportunities. These can be highlighted during the teaching with any accompanying literature (available directly from Crossing London)

Q: What is the gospel and why should we share it?
Start the session with the question What is the gospel and why should we share it? You may want to get people into pairs to discuss this. Affirm the answers given and take the opportunity to unpack any key reasons. This exercise will give you an opportunity to understand the theological spectrum in the room.
5
Q: What stops us sharing the gospel?
Again, ask this question, potentially asking people to get into groups to discuss. Get feedback. Explain that often we know we should share but we don’t and so we end up feeling guilty. Explain that this course is not about feeling guilty but about finding practical and relevant ways to share that fit with your personality.
6
Overview How can we create God conversations?
How can we effectively explain the gospel? How can we respond to difficult questions? What do we do after a great conversation? Explain the four key areas that the course will cover: How can we create God conversations? How can we effectively explain the gospel? How can we respond to difficult questions? What do we do after a great conversation? These four areas should address many of the reasons given for not sharing the Gospel. The resource has been put together by a wide range of evangelists from different backgrounds. Make a recognition that this resource does not specialise in how to reach specific people groups (e.g. Muslims)
7
1 Intimacy This is the first of five fundamental things before we start sharing. To share Jesus we must know Him. Expand on this point.
8
2 Awareness Secondly, we need to be more aware of the opportunities all around us. Share an anecdote of how you have shared Jesus as an opportunity arose. Explain that Jesus was often interrupted and those interruptions became opportunities. Ask people to look around observantly for opportunities to bless, to love and to share.
9
3 Conversation Thirdly, the importance of conversation.
Too often Christians have become known as Bible Bashers because we have not understood how conversations work. Explain how conversations are like a tennis rally. You may want to act this out. Each God conversation has not got to lead to a prayer of commitment but must finish with the person open for the next Holy Spirit encounter.
10
4 People not Projects As Christ loves us, we are called to love others. It’s important that we love people and don’t see them as projects!
11
5 Holy Spirit Evangelism is a Holy Spirit event.
Only God can transform somebody, not us! We are not pressured to lead people to faith. This is God’s job! It’s also important to remember that we do not bring God to people but that God is already at work in society.

Starting with kindness
Starting with prayer Starting with a gift Starting with culture Starting online Here are the first five of 10 ideas on how to start God conversations: Kindness – blessing others unexpectedly, e.g. carrying a spare Oyster card for when people run out or buying a coffee for the person behind you in line. Prayer – 20 million people in UK pray regularly. As people share their story, offer to pray. Prayer shows that we believe in a God who can turn situations around! Gift – Whether it be a book or something that speaks of who God is, think about how you can use gifts to spark conversations. Culture – Look out for themes in movies, TV and the media. Explore these themes in conversation. Remember that we don’t have to start talking about Jesus but can begin with important themes that explore meaning and purpose. E.g. “That film ended with a real sense of hope. What offers you hope in life?” Online – Think about your words and actions online. What do they say about you as a Christian? Posting something online can be safe place where people can choose to interact with your belief. You could show the ‘yesHEis’ video that can be found at: NB Please add real-life illustrations where you can.

Starting with the prophetic Starting with reason
Starting with spirituality Starting with questions Starting with happiness Prophetic – Ask God what to say to someone. Remember to share things gently and appropriately. You could demonstrate here, how not to share! Reason – Faith is about having a deep confidence in an explanation for why we are here that helps us live our lives in a certain way. Ask your friends to share their explanation and then ask them why they are so confident. In turn, they will then normally ask you why you believe what you believe! Spirituality – “I am not religious but I am spiritual.” Ask people about their spirituality. Have they ever experienced evil? Seen an angel? Been aware of God? Look for what God may already be doing. Questions – Ask more questions, discover people’s stories; their hopes and their dreams. What can you affirm as God-given? What can you then pray for? How can you encourage them? Happiness – One of the greatest wants in society is to be happy. How can we challenge whether possessions or fame or holidays really make us happy? How can we share about the peace, the joy and the hope that God offers? You could then direct people to Page 17 (& following) in the resource to explore these further in their own time.
14
Q: What other ways have worked for you?
We have shared 10 possible ideas but ask the group what they can add.
15
Key moments: In the calendar
Christian calendar: Christmas, Easter, Pentecost Mainstream calendar: Armistice, World Cup, Summer Holidays Look at key moments in the calendar to build relationships with people in your community: E.g. Christmas drinks and mince pies with the neighbours. Easter eggs for the office staff. World Cup Testimony fixture lists at the World Cup.
16
Key moments: In peoples’ lives
New home, New baby, New job Marriage, Retirement, Illness, Bereavement We have pastors for our churches but in fact we are all called to pastor. We need to pastor our communities… Look around your community for when the ‘For Sale’ sign comes down or the neighbour is heavily pregnant. How can you serve and support? People often explore faith when they are in times of transition. More ideas can be found here: You could then direct people to Page 9 (& following) in the resource to explore ‘Key moments’ further in their own time.

Winsome Look Around Look Up Look Out Look Forward Look After
A useful Prayer tool is the Winsome booklet produced by Crossing London (available from ‘Share Jesus International’ – ) Hand out the Winsome booklets One of the most important things in faith sharing is prayer. Winsome is a challenge to be more intentional in prayer. Look Around – for who you might prayer for, make a list of names. Look Up – pray for the people on that list regularly. Look Out – for opportunities to share with them. Look Forward – for something relevant that you could invite them to. Look After – help them in their discipleship. You could then direct people to Page 40 in the resource to review this further in their own time.
18
Challenge 1: Begin your Winsome list of people to pray for Challenge 2: This week look for an opportunity to take a conversation deeper Finish the session with these two challenges. Make space to pray and for people to ask questions. Warn people that next week you will ask people to feed back! As the trainer, it would be good for you to be modelling this too! Over the four weeks, it would be great to see a learning community develop so remind the participants that they will be encouraged to share their stories at the next session.
