Wellbeing and understanding
Te Aka Mauri Wellbeing and understanding “Not just a library building and not just a children’s health hub…it’s a collaborative approach to a community’s holistic health and wellbeing.”
3
We looked at literacy and children’s healthcare in Rotorua – and quite simply, we knew we had to think and act differently. Our statistics and social indicators revealed the need for a paradigm shift. In this context we challenged ourselves to be innovative, bold and collaborative. To create something that this country has not seen before.
4
THE NUMBERS Child out-patient services: almost a third of appointments involving Māori children aren’t attended – with the health board “very concerned” about the rate of non-appearance of Māori. The worst attendance rates were for Māori children under 14 _ with the children not brought to the appointments 29.1 per cent of the time compared to the “was not brought” total of 19.5 per cent. Inconvenience even for the most highly motivated of parents/caregivers.

COLLABORATING FOR CHANGE
The co-location of the city’s library and the hospital’s community child health services is a collaborative project between Rotorua Lakes Council and Lakes District Health Board. A key aspect of the project has been engagement with strategic partners, the community, iwi and government agencies. It is intended for the new centre and plaza to be opened late 2017.

OUR VISION – WARM AND INVITING
A safe, innovative and expansive library space to imagine, read and learn. Child health services amalgamated into one ‘easy to use’ facility where children and their whanau enjoy a coordinated, efficient and shared approach. “The refurbished building will make a statement about our community’s identity, reflecting culturally and spiritually appropriate Māori design that showcases Te Arawa’s unique identity.”
