1 Density

2 Review-Just Read Matter: anything that has mass and takes up space (volume) Everything in the universe is made of matter Made of tiny particles called atoms All forms of matt have chemical and physical properties A physical property is anything that can be observed without changing the identity of the substance. Examples are melting poing, boiling point, color, odor, hardness and density.

3 Density Notes-Write in ISN
Density: A measure of how much mass is contained in a given volume. A measure of how tightly packed matter is Water’s density is 1 g/mL

4

5 Think about it… Which is more dense: Salt water or fresh water?
Discuss with a student at your table and come up with an explanation

6 Calculating Density Mass-Amount of matter in an object
Measured in SI units of kg (or g) Use a triple beam balance or electronic scale to measure Volume-amount of space an object occupies Measured in SI units of mL of liquids and cm3 for solids Use graduated cylinder to find volume of liquids and irregularly shaped objects. Use ruler (length x width x height) to find volume of regular shaped object.

7 Volume of Irregular-Shaped Object
Water Displacement Volume of water- Volume of water + object= Volume of Object

8 Density Practice Problems (1 of 2) Show work in your ISN
What is the density of a wood block with a volume of 25 cm3 and a mass of 100 g?

9 Density Practice Problems (1 of 2) Show work in your ISN
What is the density of liquid that has a mass of 60 kg and a volume of mL?
