6 Lesson 14: Bullying and Loneliness
I want to talk about loneliness and how it relates to bullying. Have you ever felt lonely? If so, what was it like?

7 Quotes “Man’s loneliness is but his fear of life.” (Eugene O’neil)
“Loneliness and the feeling of being unwanted is the most terrible poverty.” (Mother Teresa) “To be alone is to be different, to be different is to be alone.” (Suzanne Gordon) “The eternal quest of the individual human being is to shatter his loneliness.” (Norman Cousins)

8 What does the following say to you?
“Any decent society must generate a feeling of community. Community offsets loneliness. It gives people a vitally necessary sense of belonging. Yet today the institutions on which community depends are crumbling in all the techno-societies. The result is a spreading plague of loneliness.” (Alvin Toffler)

9 What is the following quote saying about our willingness to refuse to bully others, when others think it is the popular thing to do? “The main consequence of saying no to negative peer pressure is not just withstanding ‘the heat of the moment,’ as most adults think. Rather, it is coping with a sense of exclusion as others engage in the behavior and leave the adolescent increasingly alone. It is the loss of the shared experience. Further, the sense of exclusion remains when the group later recounts what happened. This feeling of loneliness then becomes pervasive but carries an easy solution – go along with the crowd.” (Michael Riera)

10 What is the message of the following quote?
When we mistreat and reject someone they feel alone. One student said he would give anything if he could go to school and talk and laugh with friends. It hurts when I see everyone else doing that. What is the message of the following quote? “When people are lonely they stoop to any companionship.” (Lew Wallace) - Students are willing to join gangs, cults, drug groups, hate groups to have friends, be accepted and to have a place to belong.

11 When we bully students we encourage them to seek unhealthy friendships.
