MATH 102-008 Mathematical Literacy for College Students II
Class 12, March 3, 2016 Lesson 6.8: Rising Temperatures Across the United States
2
Lesson 6.8 Objectives By the end of this lesson, you should understand that: Standard deviations can be used to determine how extreme an unusual value is in a data set. Standard deviations can be used to compare different data sets.
3
Lesson 6.8 Objectives By the end of this lesson, you should be able to: Use a spreadsheet to compute the mean and standard deviation of a data set. Use the standard deviation to describe the spread of a data set. Use the mean and standard deviation to describe how extraordinary a single datum (data point) is. Use the means and standard deviations of multiple data sets to compare data values between these two datasets.
4
Lesson 6.8 Connections Main ideas in the lesson:
Knowing the mean (or median) of a data set is a first step in understanding a data set. In many cases, the variability of the data set is equally important.
5
Lesson 6.8 Connections Connections to the 8 course goals:
2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively. 5. Use appropriate tools strategically. 7. Look for and make use of structure.
