Resource Sharing Committee
Chair: Diane Smith, George Mason University The committee has been investigating Tipasa and talking with OCLC about the move from ILLiad. Many libraries are turning to commercial vendors to acquire articles from new or embargoed journals. The committee has been investigating if there are journal titles that VIVA libraries should subscribe to individually to fulfill requests for all within the state.

Steering Committee Chair: Steve Helm, Radford University
Last year, VIVA joined the Open Textbook Network as a System Member. This initiative grew out of an RSC Task Force on Open Educational Resources. Last year, there were: 37 workshops with a number of the workshops serving multiple institutions. 358 faculty attendees from 25 Virginia colleges and universities. 85 faculty reviews of open textbooks with more expected. 7 course adoptions for over 150 students with more expected.
10
Open Textbook Network When asked how likely they were to adopt an open textbook after the workshop, 75% of the faculty members who completed reviews said yes, 23% said they were undecided, and only 2% said no. The Steering Committee has authorized an additional $20,000 for faculty review support for FY18 through FY21. Each institution will be allocated five faculty reviews up to 20 participating institutions per year.

Zepheira/Atlas Systems Linked Data Pilot
VIVA is partnering with Zepheira and Atlas Systems to conduct a Linked Data pilot. There were three webinars about the Library.Link network attended by 69 people. During the pilot, over 48,000 records representing the special collections content of seven institutions (LVA, CWM, GMU, JMU, UVA, VCU, and VT) were converted into Linked Data and loaded into the Library.Link network.

These collections are now not only discoverable from search engines, but they also have their own Internet location that guides people back to the institution.

Resource Cancellations
VIVA received a 5% budget cut for both FY17 and FY18. This resulted in the cancellation of a number of shared resources. The cancellation decisions were based on VIVA’s Cancellation Guidelines, the work of the Value Metric Task Force, and standard metrics such as cost per use and levels of use across VIVA.
