Vocabulary Event: Something that is happening
ex: I’m making a bunch of sandwiches ex. I’m trying to open a combination lock Possible Outcomes: Everything that could happen in an event ex. Turkey sandwich, cheese sandwich, tuna sandwich ex. Combination attempts: 001, 002, 003, 004… Sample Space: The group of all possible outcomes of an event Tree Diagram: Visual of all possible outcomes of an event

Vocabulary Compound Event – 2 or more events happening at the same time ex. Making sandwiches with meat AND bread choices! Whoa. ex. Opening a 2-number combination lock Fundamental Counting Principal – Multiplying the possible outcomes of two or more events. ex. I have 2 types of bread to choose from and 3 types of meat. 2x3=6. I can make 6 types of sandwiches. ex. The lock I’m breaking in to has 2 dials and 0- 9 on each dial. 2x10=20. There are 20 different lock combinations.

Ex. Mrs. Shutt has five cats (Bubbles, Fork, Leftover, Turtle, and Bob) she likes to dress up in five different coats (leather, hoodie, knit, rain, ski) and take to three different stores (Payless Shoes, Lowes, and Tractor Supply). How many different combinations of this nonsense could Mrs. Shutt make?
