2 Technology and Student Achievement
Research shows that technology has a significant and reliable impact on student achievement. Researchers agree that technology cannot be treated as a single independent variable. Student achievement is gauged by students’ ability to use higher-order thinking skills (such as thinking critically, analyzing, making inferences and problem solving. Clearly, evidence indicates that when used effectively, “technology can support higher-order critical thinking skills by engaging students in authentic, complex tasks within collaborative learning contexts” (Means, Blando, Olson, Moroccon & Zorfass, 1993).

3 Uses of the Internet Communication
Information Retrieval (Research/Resource) Information Publishing

4 Communication E-mail is the most widely used service on the Internet.
Anyone with a computer connected to the Internet can communicate with anyone else in the world who is also connected. Anyone can join discussion groups to discuss problems and share experiences.

5 Information Publishing
Students and Teachers can publish material on the Internet. Students’ short stories and poems can be posted on the Internet for the world to read. Teachers can share research and teaching ideas with educators around the world.

6 Information Retrieval (Research/Resource)
There are all types of useful information available for students and teachers on the Internet in just about any field of study. The Internet can be used as either a resource tool or a research tool for both students and teachers.

7 What to keep in mind Planning is essential to effectively use the
Internet into the classroom. Use a Systematic Planning Procedure Target a specific population Identify content and activities to be used with the Internet Come out with specific and measurable objectives Select materials and type of technology Select Learner Activities With Specific outcomes Evaluation the effectiveness of your internet activities

8 In order for internet activities, to effectively work:
The instructor must always preview the site and plan and accordingly Internet activity must correlate to the objectives of the lesson plan Students must have skills to surf through the Internet and access appropriate/desired information Students must explore Internet sites with specific outcomes
