1 SDHT School Wellness Policy
The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act strengthens the requirements for local school wellness policies required by the US Dept. Agriculture Please see the important changes and our NEW recommended food list for classroom celebrations – This list combines our Safe Foods List with the new SMART SNACK requirements

School based activities to promote wellness Quality physical education program

3 NEW Nutritional Guidelines
All food sold through National School Lunch program comply with federal guidelines All a la carte, snacks and vending meet USDA Smart Snacks in School Standards Fundraising must meet Smart Snacks Standards (limited exceptions for infrequent fundraisers permitted) Classroom parties must meet Smart Snack Standards

4 Nutrition…. Any foods or beverages marketed or promoted to students on the school campus during the school day shall meet or exceed the established federal nutrition standards (USDA Smart Snacks) inlcuding SDHT Food Services Fundraising Classroom Celebrations (This does not apply to foods bought from home for personal classroom snacks or lunches)

5 USDA Smart Snack Standards
To qualify as a Smart Snack, a food or entree must meet the general nutrition standards: Grain Products that have 50 % or more whole grain by weight (have whole grain listed as first ingredient); or Have as the first ingredient a fruit, a vegetable, a dairy product, or a protein food; or Be a combination of food that contains at least ¼ cup of fruit and/or vegetable; AND……. 

6 USDA Smart Snack Standards
Meet the nutrient standards for calories, sodium, sugar and fats: Calories 200 calories or less Sodium 200 mg or less Total Fat 35% or less than total calories Saturated Fat Less than 10% of calories Trans Fat 0 g Sugar 35% by weight or less

7 SDHT Recommended Safer Foods and Smart Snacks
Controls for foods known to cause severe reactions for SDHT Students (excludes known allergens and not manufactured in allergen-free facilities- Formerly The “Safe Foods List” Meets the required Smart Snack Requirements (insert link to NEW LIST) Applies to school celebrations (insert link to web page Food Allergy Policy) Additional precautions or exclusions may exists in designated Allergen-Free classrooms
