Semicolons and Colons ; :

Semicolon 1) Use a semicolon to separate main clauses that are not joined by a coordinating conjunction. The students enjoyed Spring Break; now they are eager for summer vacation.

Semicolon 2) Use a semicolon for items in a series when these items contain commas. The school has several athletic sponsors, including Mr. Baugh, who coaches soccer; Ms. Dalloway, who coaches track; and Ms. McCary, who coaches cheerleading.

Semicolon 3) Use a semicolon to separate two main clauses joined by a coordinating conjunction when such clauses already contain several commas. She has traveled to several countries, including Thailand, Myanmar, England, France, Austria, Germany, and Switzerland; but she is happy to return home, which is, of course, Alabama.

Colons 2) Use a colon before a long, formal statement or quotation.
3) Use a colon before a statement that explains or clarifies a preceding statement. He deserves a raise: He completed the project on schedule and under budget.
