HANCOCK FOOTBALL SPECIAL TEAMS
2
SPECIAL TEAMS One-third of all football games involve one of the special teams. That means that we must attack the special teams the same way we do our offense and defense. Our special teams must give us the ability to change the game at any time. Many games will be won because we make a big play on special teams.
3
Special Teams Standards
Score No punts or field goals blocked Block at least two kicks per game No penalties No turnovers No bad snaps No missed field goals or extra points Hold the opponents inside the 25 on kickoffs Hold opponents to less than 10 yards per punt return Recover all onside kicks

PUNT AND PUNT RETURN TEAMS
5
Punt Protection and Coverage
Our punt protection philosophy will be man across the front, with our personal protectors picking up everything from inside out. Each player in the front line will be responsible for blocking a particular man.

Punt Team Alignment SPREAD PUNT

ALIGNMENT The front seven will align three yards from the man to their inside. The personal protectors will align with their heels six yards from the LOS, double to kicking foot side of the punter. The punter will align 14 yards from the LOS directly behind the snapper. Block man, starting from outside to inside.

Keep the ball on you inside shoulder. Upbacks – Coverage lanes are the uprights. Keep the ball on your inside shoulder. Center – A good snap is most important. Release to the football. Protector – Allow no pressure up the middle. Safety to right. Punter – Good kick to called side. Safety to left side.

Covering Punts is a Skill
Always block first. We must stop the rush at the LOS, then cover. Sprint to your assigned lanes, then squeeze to the football. Teams break long runs on punts because players do not sprint to cover, do not stay in lanes, or miss tackles. Breakdown and get under control when approaching the return man and tackle high. Diving at legs causes misses, but hitting the ball carrier in chest causes fumbles. You may not touch the return man until he touches the football and may never touch him if he calls for a fair catch. If the ball hits the ground before being touched, let it roll toward the opponents end zone, but not back toward the LOS. When you down the football, pick it up and hand it to the official. If the return man fumbles, cover the ball and secure it. Do not allow the ball to roll into the end zone. Cover it. If you are unable to fall on it, then you may bat it back toward the LOS.
