The UK is a democracy with a free press. However there are a number of bodies to which the press and other media are accountable. Some of these bodies have considerable power. All forms of media are subject to the law, for example: Obscene publication Act 1959 Official secrets Act 1989 Deformation Act 1952 Broadcasting Act 1990 The organisations below monitors standards and handles complaints: Broadcasting complaints commission Press complaints commission Broadcasting standards council Advertising standards council British board of film classification Independent television commission

5 Who deserves media intrusion and why?
Should the media have a social conscience? General Studies Task: Who deserves media intrusion and why? Using the images provided of people in the media, along with your personal knowledge of the personalities make a critical argument as to why each individual may or may not deserve media intrusion. Think about the role each individual plays in public life Are there any moral media issues that apply? You can work in small groups Task should take no longer than 8 minutes Learning Objectives All students will be able to consider the role of the media in the lives of public personalities All students will be able to consider whether a number of public personalities deserve or do not deserve media intrusion Some students will be able to critically analyse circumstance where media intrusion is merited or not merited.
